Im in East london which is a fair side bigger than Soweto and I can categorically say that we have more supporters here, but we arent getting visited and we understand that they cant go everywhere.

I would be extremely surprised if East London really was bigger than Soweto - i'm pretty sure you're confused on that point. (Though sure - there may have been more rugby supporters there before the World Cup)

The point is that this is a big mistake to have made when (for once) there is so much goodwill attached to the rugby team. Like others have pointed out, it just gives their detractors ammunition.

True. But like it or not, sport is an issue. Thats a reality SA Rugby has to deal with. They really had a great opportunity here to score some points, but they are blowing it. More confirmation for me that the administrators are not as good at their job as the players are at theirs.

As with jhb and Soweto, East London has a Township forming part of it called Mdtansane, up until a few years ago, Mdtansane was bigger, area wise, than Soweto. Even East London itself is not as much of a one horse town as people are led to believe.

but that's beside the point, fact is the boks cant go everywhere. For them, just doing a road tour is cool enough already. And its getting quite lame how everyone claims to be the number one supporter.

Is it because Soweto has bigger mansions? No, cannot be, those with mansions are helping grow their community, and are not concerned with political staging.
Is it because of the amount of people living in Soweto? Nope, cos some 60% of that population is at work or performing other activities in the city centers.
Is it because Soweto have their own newspaper? Perhaps.

Is seems to me that people are being led to believe that 20 people who play rugby successfully are now suddenly responsible for South Africa's political arena.

What's next? Is Bafana Bafana going to be held responsible for Traffic Congestion?

so how big is Soweto chiskop? Our local township, Mdantsane, is only second to Soweto in numbers... and of course that has little to do with my point that the EC (not just east london) gets little or nothing from the rest of SA. Rugby aside. Despite the fact that most of our leaders hail from here. So as my point goes, there are more important things to be concerned about than a bus load of rugby players visiting the masses.

Nobel peace prizes has buggerall to do with the Bokke driving in Soweto. It has no bearing on this topic. The obvious thing to consider is the security concerns.

Some posts i read here, too many to quote, have suggested that people in Soweto don't even know what Rugby is.

Well Soweto has a history in rugby, mostly from people that moved here from the Eastern Cape. And pending verification from The Guiness World Book of Records people, also the record for the longest rugby game. Held the Friday before the Final at 7 pm till 7pm just before the Final.

And in the article it states, that people had gotten ready to welcome the Boks, including those people that sponsor the Soweto Rugby club, these preparations were made becuase SA Rugby officials had indicated they are going to make an appearance.

With all the effort that was made to show support, that is why I, and many others, feel that they were snubbed.

I think its purely a numbers game ... Limited tour time, hit the big cities. a 5 min stop in Soweto might not have been a bad idea. or even a good ol' drive-thru.

EL didnt make it, but that's cool ... not a train smash. At the end of the day, darren. whichever places were left out will be unhappy. You can't please everyone.
