They (AMD) had good cards but dodgy drivers and bad support lost them more market share which in the past few years has lead to Nvidia being so strong.

bwahahahahahahaha

So tell me, when last have AMD released drivers that literally burnt their GPUs to a crisp? Cause we all know Nvidia had lots of fun with SC2, with GPUs happily melting away
Gotta love that "AMD has bad drivers" argument, lol

Shoo, Nvidia fanboi! If you could be a little more open minded you'd see both companies have had poor drivers, both have had poor cards. And both have had great drivers, and great cards. This PhysX nonsense however is just that - nonsense.

yes they can copyright software, what I meant was ATI could make their own version and not get sued.

As for the CPU vs GPU argument: While CPU's are capable of running physX the architecture focuses on completing one thread quickly while GPUs with CUDA used for GFX focuses on processing a lot of threads at a slower, which is better suited to separate intensive physics calculations. Secondly from a business perspective why would Nvidia allow games to be played with their proprietary software, which they spend money on, while not receiving and benefits from it?

PhysX if free to use for all, Nvidia just sponsors them to use it to gain exposure, IE marketing. As for ATI being poor who's fault is that? Don't get me wrong they keep Nvidia honest, but if they were a more competitive firm Nvidia would not dominate. This comes down business practise, and they solely have them selves to blame. They had good cards but dodgy drivers and bad support lost them more market share which in the past few years has lead to Nvidia being so strong.

I have a feeling AMD decided to go against implementing their own physics engine or rather, pursuing their own engine, because the market doesn't need another one.

Hovok physics is a great physics engine that runs on everything. If you've played battlefield 3, you'd know what I mean!

Basically, Nvidia is trying to play duty now. AMD have been releasing cards long before Nvidia does. AMD's drivers are pretty solid, and AMD is releasing new technologies that people actually care about (ie: Eye Infinity... Anyone notice how Nvidia scrambled to offer something similar?).

The fact is, AMD isn't trying to buy the market, they just offering competitive products. What Nvidia did would be like Intel paying off Microsoft to make Windows 8 run faster on intel processors, that would kill AMD.

This is the penalty you get for buying ATI. A brand well known for neglecting their customers.

Disagree. Apart from early day Catalyst drivers that made more Chinese jump from tall buildings than Foxconn, what have they done to neglect their customers?

This does not make any business sense, you just limit sales then???? Do you think that more people will buy it with Nvidia cards now that before because it is exclusive? Will this cover the loss in sales from people with other cards that now wont buy it?

They are the worst in Linux driver support and for many years intentionally shunned the linux community.

With Steam coming to Linux they'll fix their drivers

It's really not that much difference, extra particles in a cell shaded FPS, no thanks

Pre-2007? They've come a long way since though, not?

Doesnt matter, I still have a very negative vibe because of that and supported the brand that supported me :D There have been some improvements, but the ATI linux drivers are still terrible.

Even though I just bought a GTX670, I am upset with the Borderlands developers over this.

Luckily there's a decent chance that you can drop a GT520 or GT610 in to your system and use the old nvidia drivers to run physx on AMD/ATI systems.

Borderlands 2 isn't an nvidia only game, it features physx effects which are only possible on an nvidia card - unless you do some basic haxoring. It's no different to what happens on consoles all the time - one vendor licenses additional features as a selling point to sway buyers to their hardware. Big deal this isnt.

Glad I've made the decision then to drop a GTX in my new system (which I'm hopefully getting end of this month). I've been an ATI / AMD for quite some time now, even though I haven't had a gaming PC now for many years. Going the GTX660 route, unless I can scrape together another couple of hundred Rands to go for a 670.

I don't understand. In the link above they show that Borderlands 2 is going to be released on the Xbox360..... Isn't that just contradicting the "Nvidia only" thing?

It's NOT platform or GPU manufacturer specific. The point is that those running NVidia cards in their PCs will have loads of extra eye candy that the rest won't have, but the core game will still be the same.

Oh, cool I'll just cancel my pre-order then. It's enough I have to put up with an "Nvidia, the way its meant to be played" splash screen every game I play but now they deliberately make the game look worse on a different GPU and the game developer actually agrees to it?

No big loss, never finished Borderlands 1 anyway and I have a mountain of games that I haven't even installed yet.

After an hour you wont even care about the effects any more, it's so minuscule in the greater scheme of things. You'll end up far more focused on actually playing to care about such a small thing. I find it so silly to write the game off because you don't get effect A or B, an effect that makes no difference to your enjoyment of the game whatsoever.

Borderlands 2 doesn't look that amazing, so if they want to strip the nice little effects from all AMD Gfx users then it's just too bad they'll make a compelling arguement to a huge amount of people simply not to get it...

I hope nVidia made it worth their while.
