Interesting shape .... not bad looking (sorry might be vein but 90% of electronics I buy are based on looks .... I'm sure I'm not the only one)

I thought so too, the photo makes it look a LOT bigger than it actually is. Check the video. Not too sure if I like the mirror finish on the front though. What would be awesome if behind that mirror finish was one of those 'invisible' VFD displays like on those shiny Samsung DVD players.

The other thing is the price! $299! If someone could build a similarly spec'd HTPC for the same price I'd be very impressed.

Where did you find a price?
I saw it at $199.99 /amazon pre-order.
 
I recon it'll way outclass the mede8er on the interface department... it also has great online functionality.

I'm going to order one for my LCD - and depending on how well it works, might sell my mede8er and get one for my other room as well.

I used to love all the 3rd party apps you called install :)
 
Interesting - I think I'll install it on my mac mini and see what it's like. :)
 
I enjoyed the PC software, especially the add on apps, could watch full seasons of South Park, etc - although I did find it a bit buggy, and also had a huge issue with how it groups music - by Artist instead of Album Artist.

Assuming you are talking about the Mede8er MED500x then there are a huge amount of thing the Boxee can do that the Mede8er can’t, let’s just have a look at the makes these different players tick
Mede8er MED500x
Chipset : Realtek 1073DD 400mhz
Memory : 128mb DDR

Boxee
Chipset : Intel CE4110 1200Mhz
Memory 1GB

The BoxEE has a full web browser, it has NetFlix and Vudu, facebook, twitter, the far superior hardware enables it to run Flash applications, which makes it much easier for the developers making Jukeboxes and scrapper that actual works, it enables multi-tasking, and has lots of custom apps, with the Mede8er you have ziltsj. Everyone knows the Realtek Chipset is a piece of ….., it constantly hangs, some movies plays without sound and you have to restart, the scrapper gives huge amount of problems, you can’t compare the Mede8er with the BoxEE, its like comparing a Nissan 1400 bakkie with a Hummer H3. The only real competition the BoxEE has is the Xtreamer Ultra

Not asking why the Boxee is better, I'm asking what he needs that the Mede8er can't do.

Sure the Mede8er is ageing technology. I'm not comparing it to the Boxee - that would be apples and oranges. Much cheaper than the Boxee though and does everything I need it to. I've never had any hanging, movies playing without sound (since the MKV header fix/update), or any other problems. Nor have my friends who also own the Mede8er.

Mede8er still looks the best. Xtreamer looks like a dog's breakfast. You work for them right? :D

Why is the Mede8er so popular? *edit* Or perhaps, why was, since it's older tech not comparable to this newer tech?

Boxee has been around for a while, you can download the software for free and make your own HTPC if you want.

I used the Boxee software for a bit and it looks really great but was slow on my machine.

I still think that things like the Med8ter and AC ryan are more straight forward and robust.

Well my friends that still has the Mede8er with the new v4 is still having problems,
And I suspect it was so popular since it was one of the first media players in SA, and maybe since it manufactured in SA and such a huge hype has been made around it?, it stays ridiculously overpriced and has the worst hardware specs of all the players
And no, I don’t work for Xtreamer, do you work for Samsung :-D
To be honest, im not that happy with my Xtreamer (and it has slightly better specs than the Mede8er), but I have the same problems with the xtreamer than the people with the Mede8er has, the worthless Realtek chipset causes the instability, you can build the best software in the world, but if your hardware can’t support it, or if it’s not stable what’s the use…..
 
Yeh - my mede8er is just used to play HD stuff of the network - purely because the interface is ****y... if I want to play music I have to go through so much hassle that I've made other plans.
