Boxee Box

Yip.... now I just have to sort out the streaming issues.... streaming youtube last night was impossible, and by impossible I mean it took about a minutes buffering for 10 seconds of play.

sorry for my ignorance but whats the difference between the boxee software and actually buying the boxee device? (ie running the boxee software on your htpc as opposed to buying the boxee hardware)

well I have been playing with the software and thus want it, the issue holding me back from loading it up on a pc and connecting the pc is how to comfortably control it whilst chilling on the bed or couch.

If you have a decent HTPC then you'd probably be better off using that... I went with the Boxee Box because my HTPC is old, and I'm to lazy to build up any other one... and I like the tiny form factor of the boxee box, it has three cables and I can move it around the house easily.

The RF control works well with the boxee box, but I think a third party remote is needed, I'm not a fan of this tiny keyboard, especially in my projector room, because its too dark to see.

Although, I believe it also works with the standard MS MCE keyboard and mouse (using the USB IR Receiver from the MCE Keyboard and Mouse)

Boxee is based on xbmc isn't it? I think Boxee is simplier... I'm not one for struggling, so prefer a plug and play system.

I fixed all my media file naming this weekend, and boxee picked up all my titles, download the meta data, etc .. it only missed one movie out of 480 odd, and that's only because I put the wrong year in the name.

For me, the selling point is on demand streaming through netflix, hulu or similar. If I can sit down and watch say sUper 15 rugby followed by Conan O brian and BBC news, then its worth every cent.

I unfortunately think you'll need 10MB for that :( The 4MB thing doesn't seem stable enough.

Well - my Boxee Box is still happily playing along. Last night I watched "The Mechanic" in 1080p WITH DTS-HD - I even checked my receiver to make sure the light was lit up - it played, but dropped audio about 6 times during the movie - apparently the firmware scheduled for release in May fixes this.

I could not get HD audio working with my mede8er....

So - still impressed with Boxee Box, although I can't get streaming working 90% of the time - but this seems due to my connection... I'm going to see if I can't try the Openweb Afterhours account next weekend and see if it offers any improvement.

I am just using the boxee software on my pc with uncapped 4mb mweb and streaming is also very slow for me. Was trying to watch death battle under series last night. But the buffering was crazy slow.

I can't watch a 240p youtube video (on both PC and Boxee Box - so definitely connection related) - other times I could play high quality monster truck videos with minimal buffering from Speed application on boxee

Yup, if it can do this then I would also consider getting one. Xrapid, please let us know if the streaming improves.

Using netflix, can you set the thing to download a movie and then watch it later, or is it only via streaming?

AFAIK - only streaming, hence the problem - I'm going to see if I can get Openweb to let me try the afterhours account this weekend, see if it fixes things...

Anyone know who to call to get Telkom to reset my line? Would like to try that as well.

Just an update - enjoying the Boxee Box immensely - use it way more than the mede8er, my internet connection has stabilized, so I've been playing around with online content, so far no real issues, every now and then I get buffering, but its not to bad.

I'm looking forward to the firmware update, hopefully this month for HD sound support.

Still need to try paid for content like Netflix though...I've started looking into proxy providers.

This is boxxy:

Hulu/Netflix pointless in SA (except if you know some proxy magic)
