Sorry but I am very much in the camp of him being wrong.

You don't shoot at anything you don't personally see and identify.

This guy should be in jail with that rugby player from a few years ago who murdered his daughter.

No wonder the government wants to take guns of civilians with lunatics like that running around.

I think a farmer should be allowed to shoot stray dogs.
Farmers/people should be allowed to shoot people who are threatening them or their family.
Farmers/people should be held up for murder for shooting someone by mistake. There is no place for mistakes in life and death circumstances.
very well said!!!!!!!!

OMW!

Murder definition - The unlawful killing of one human by another, especially with premeditated malice
http://www.answers.com/topic/murder

Murder is the unlawful and intentional killing of a human being by another.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder

If you meant to say that her father had the intention of killing her, thats total bull****.
That guy was broken, anyone would be in his right state of mind.

That guy suffered enough and he needs to live with that terrible mistake each day of his life. The thought of killing his own daughter!

Thats why Government's push to ensure that all licenced firearm owners have the proper training and understand the responsibility of owning a firearm

Rubbish. If it was just about training and whatnot then the license should come through quickly after getting the training and proving competency. The government is simply dragging it's feet and hoping people give up.

The SAP has a far worse safety record than civilian gun owners. Particularly sport shooters. And they're supposed to determine who is competent and understands the responsibility of firearm ownership?

I stand under correction but a women was sentenced to three months imprisonment for stealing a bar of soap - while this farmer gets off with a fine -

You seem not to be making a correct comparison. The deliberate theft of soap is not the same as the accidental shooting of a person. Even if the shooting were reckless, the two are simply not the same!

He identified the target as a dog. Clearly he was mistaken about what he saw. Hunters do make mistakes. Not often, but they do.

I seem to remember the guy who accidentally shot his daughter got off with a fine.

This is not what the new licences are about. Current licence holders already have training.

The ANC opened the ownership of guns to everyone and in doing so, did not do proper suitablility checks. They now want to reduce the number of licencees until eventually everyone except the police are disarmed.

They will do this by making it so difficult to attain one, that eventually nobody will bother. By making it 'voluntarily', they save the cost of paying out compensation for every firearm handed in - like they did in the UK.

Don't feed the troll.
I have an opinion on this matter and I have given it and just because you may not agree with it doesn't mean I'm a troll, who the hell do you think you are!? I have ignored you previously but you continue with your bitching, if I'm a troll ignore me and let others decide for themselves whether they want to entertain my posts or not, I'm sure they are mature enough to make that decision without your "advice".

You are a troll due to your previous behaviour and your same behaviour on this thread. You make the allegation that it was a racially motivated killing without any kind of explanation or substantiating evidence.

KIEPIE

I do not get your instruction, there is NO EXCUSE! He picked up a gun and shot a child! If he needs glasses, he shouldn't fire a gun. There is no excuse, end of story! This man will go to bed everyday of his life, remembering what he did,... If you pick up a gun and fire it, it comes with a commitment to kill. I do not care who pointed to the dog, he should not have fired the gun without confirming what he was shooting at. That child had a bigger right to life. this is not an accident. It is stupidity!

No it is so government can swallow more money! The gun laws in this country is a laugh! It is purely created to disarm people and to make money. There is nothing honorable in it.

Ja Angelo, and what about all the farm murders?
Are they not also racial murders that go unpunished? Like some previous posts indicated, this farmer might have been a victim before, and also just now "taking matters into his own hands"!!!!
Is that how pathetic boers are, "taking matters into his own hands" against innocent children?

Come on guys.

There is alot of factors to this.

The time of day this happened, the extreme stress farmers are under etc.
this could have been an honest mistake and that is why the court ruled the way they did.

Nothing is going to change the outcome. a Little boy is dead. Mistake I would say so. No way ever any man can shoot and kill another child just because. Yes I know some animals living in this country does, however they don't sit in court and cry like babies because of what they did.

100%

people tend to blow things out of proportion,IMO what would you do if you were a farmer,Nowadays farmers let alone normal south africans are constantly in danger from crime/murder.

This 11 year old should never of been there,Why why why did he go into/onto the farmers property and what was the boy doing on his property.

you guys sit and ask and defend the child becos he is a child yes? well WAKE up!!! ive seen 8 year olds thrown into peoples cars and hi jack them,Ive had a child crawl through my window and open my locked door so his older/bigger friends can come and ohhhh say rob me!!

there are worse things that has happened that we will never know, than a child been mistaken for a animal and a farmer being vigilant

peace out!

@ubberfunk

I completely get your point, but this case is a little different. As far as I know, the farmer did not feel his life was threatened when he shot at the "dog". Had he suspected that there were dangerous criminals in the bushes, my opinion of him would be different. The fact is he didn't and he should have been more vigilent. If he can't handle the responsibility that comes with a gun, he shouldn't be allowed to have one.

If you lived on a farm you would have shot first too then asked questions.

1. If it was a dog, I would kill it as it would eat my Live Stock.
2. If I saw something behind a bush close to my house @ Dusk *&%^ I'll shoot too.

Tha fact is that the court understood the factors and Judged accordingly.

Firstly he didn't realise it was a child and once he did he did what he could to rectify the situation. Secondly, the child was trespassing on private property, and unfortunately everybody is nervous with the crime levels these days.

Read my post. AFAIK the farmer did not feel threatened. That means he had no reason to suspect there was anything dangerous (to him not his livestock) in the area. I know farms can be dangerous, but nothing I read suggests that this guy was even thinking about a possible farm attack in progress.

He's no murderer, but he is an irresposible gun owner! I don't know if jail time would've been appropriate, but 20k is far too lenient.
