Bringing Internet content closer to local broadband users

What if international content one day becomes cheaper than local (Telkom...yes, you). Will local data centers still be financially viable?

Why no mention of Akamai, which already has a local presence via IS and is used by Microsoft et al?

All I want is a local google/youtube servers and facebook.

Then that'll make the most of local only.

Ofc, the best thing would be to get rid of local only and use the internet like how it's meant to be. On a global scale.
This country is the only country in the world I've heard of that uses "local only" servers. How ****ing **** is that?

INTERNET, not AFRICANET!

This isn't an option until LLU at the very least.

To several ISP it already is... and it's not just Telkom that charge for building their SA infrastructure.

We now have ISP peering and content peering. Will there be a 'voice peering point' as well, better still a voip peering point of sorts?

You are welcome to peer your VoIP traffic over JINX and there has been discussions around non-IP voice peering at JINX too. Get in touch with ISPA if you want to know more - you don't even need to be an ISPA member :)

Does anyone know what percentage of local content is housed by IS? My guess is a LOT...
These PR articles are all well and good but local peering of 10%, of barely unused content, of South African content isn't going to revolutionise anything unless IS start peering... which I can't seem them doing in the near future. Carrier neutral data centres are great and the only obvious solution but only if they do actually house the content we use e.g. banking & downloads.

Hats off to Teraco for the PR though. They are doing a really good job. I guess that every little helps.
