This thread has been quiet for a long time! Have we all just given up on Telkom?
My early-adopter ADSL line started life at 4 Mbps, synced at 6Mbps+ after the exchange was upgrade to handle 10 Mbps, and settled into a comfortable middle age running at 4Mbps with 12dB or more of noise margin.
Lately though the speed has degraded. Late last year I was only able to sync at about 3Mbps, but with adequate noise margin most of the time. Now, it's down to 2.5Mbps at 7dB noise margin (and my neighbour tells me he's only getting 1.2Mbps).
I'm also seeing a rise in the frequency of disconnects - which can be a real problem for us gamers, whether the game is tanks or bridge.
And then there's the evening congestion problem. Latency that balloons out to many hundreds of milliseconds, making streaming video a non-starter.
Meanwhile, the much-vaunted Telkom FTTH rollout seems to have stalled. Overhead fibre in my street that was pulled before Christmas hasn't been touched for two months.
And now Telkom wants to cut its workforce by another 40%...
I've logged a fault re my poor link speed and noise margin, but despite multiple callbacks from Telkom, nobody seems to have a clue as to how to fix the problem. Should I be grateful that they haven't already closed the case?
