Morning everyone.

I know there are a million threads already asking this same question. But there are wise heads here on the forum when it comes to cars, so it's frankly your fault.

I have a 2008 Hyundai i10 which is paid up for a number of years. Main reason I haven't upgraded is because its my car and not the banks and has been very reliable. But with about 195k on the clock there just seemingly seems to be always something wrong and its costing me a bit

So looking to do an upgrade but am on a budget of between R100k - R110k but as a push maybe R120k (but only if it's a really good deal and I would be stupid to let it go. I'm looking between Hyundai and Renault, some examples below:

Between the Renault's, I would prefer the Sandero although they tend come with higher milleage than I'd prefer or an older model. The Kwid, I am aware of the issues, but would likely be a transitional car for a year or 2 and then traded in when finances allowed. Also with the Kwid, there seem to be a million different models so that is a little confusing. I know not to get the first models that came out, but from which year did the improvements come in so that it wasn't a death trap?

I quite like the Grand i10 but have heard that it is a little low in power. Keeping in mind that I'm coming from the old school, I probably wouldn't notice anyway. With the i20, not too keen with the milleage and the year models are beginning to reach the low 2010's

I am probably leaning towards the Sandero or Grand i10, the link just being examples. Fuel economy and reliability are my priorities. What should I be looking out for on these models? And any others brands I should be considering, like Suzuki?

320D would be the best bet.

Out of that list i would be looking at the Hyundais, i10 or i20.
You need to be more specific. paste some ads within the OP's bracket. We all know its a great all rounder, but some people wont know where to start.

Kwid shouldn't even be on the list. it barely qualifies as a car.
Dude, they gave me one as a loan car. it was by far the worst car I ever drove.

I had i10's as rentals, ill much rather go this route.

I've driven all of these for extended periods.
Kwid: Sister owns one that I drive quite often.
Absolutely hate everything about it.
Handling is rubbish, engine is rubbish, her one has the AMT gearbox which is rubbish.

Sandero: FIL had one for a few years that was financed on my name and I drove a lot.
Way ahead of the Kwid and my 2nd favorite on your list
Had to replace the turbo and timing chain after 90 000km which luckily didn't cost too much.
Turbo replaced by Turbo Master in CPT for under R10k and they did a brilliant job

Grand i10: What the FIL has now after the Sandero was written off.
Slightly better to drive than the Sandero, costs less to maintain but less cabin and boot space.

i20 1.2: Pretty much the grand i10 but the same engine in a bigger body.
I would get the i20 1.4 if I were you since the 1.2 in there is not great.
I owned the i20 1.4d and loved it.

Would like to mention the Picanto 1.2 since you are considering the Grand i10.
Same car but more standard features and looks better IMO.

Sandero is the only one with turbo. Extremely reliable engine, been on the market in different cars since 2012.

Turbo replacements at 90k? my 320d OG tutbo at 200k and was still pulling when I sold it at 200k.

Get a toyota Auris.

Yeah that was not great.
Turbo Master mentioned it was not the first they had to do.

The timing chain having to be replaced because it was stretched at 90k was also concerning.
Luckily I picked that up when I heard the car idling because the FIL would have just kept on driving

Not sure if we've got a lemon but we bought a Sandero as a company car from new. Now with 60k km on the clock, it's been to dealership more times than I can count.

Thanks for the feedback. So I take it I should rather use my nephews peddle car over the Kwid...

I'm leaning towards the Grand i10. My current car woes aside, my i10 has been a warhorse over the years so I've enjoyed the Hyundai brand.

I've heard Kia can be a bit expensive when it comes to repairs, so tended to stay away

Knowing the turbo on the Sandero can be an issue is good to know

A few questions for you to consider.
Why are your wanting to get rid of an already paid off car?
Is the cost of repairs/maintenance you doing at the moment more than what you would be paying monthly/yearly?

Reason im asking, The i10 is a lovely little car, my wife got one about a year and a half ago after having her previous car for over 12 years and racking up close to 300k km, it was starting to use oil and smoke and get heavier on fuel, the i10 is cheap to maintain, very light on fuel and so far not one issue. And secondly i wish i had worked out the costs of financing a car in relation to the repairs i was doing on my 1995 Fiat Uno 1100 with over 250k on the clock. i sold my Uno mid way through last year because i thought it was costing alot in small repairs and issues, i got myself a 2nd hand low mileage Chev aveo 1.6 16v with full service history which i somewhat regret at times, fuel consumption went from 16-18km/l with the Uno to 12-13km/l in the Chev if i drive nicely, exactly 1 month after buying it the head gasket blew, cost of repairs was half of what i got for the Uno, thankfully i took a warranty which covered most of the bill but it could have ended up being a lot worse.

So before getting yourself into debt, think about the pros and cons, 195k is not that high mileage if you are maintaining the car and doing regular servicing. At 120k for a new car, depending what you get for your car, repayments should be 1.5-1.8k per month, over 12 months R18000 to R21600 per year, so if you paying anywhere close to that on repairs, then it is definitely time to get a new car.

The car has served me well but over the last year I have broken down 3 times. I need reliability as it can cause issues getting to work and back.
