Hi wanting to know who has FTTH in this area? Telkom called me this morning to schedule installation for tuesday, 30 april 2015 (I applied online about a month ago).

Wanted to know if there are any other people in the area and what do you currently have running? I don't want to sign 24-month contract. Also I already have 20mbps adsl, Very stable too.

Also can I use ADSL accounts on the Fibre link (Dial PPPOE).

Regards,
Sirus

You can use adsl accounts on telkom FTTH.

You will have to sign a 24 month contract for FTTH ,no way around that.

Thanx H. Na then not gonna sign up. My 20mbps ADSL is fine until they remove that 24 month contract.

Good luck with that. the 24 month contract is their way of financing your installation and equipment cost. I know of no FTTH provider that will do the install on month to month basis and then take the risk that you cancel before the installation and the equipment is paid off. Unless of course you can find a provider that allows you to pay the "connection fee" as a once off lump sum.

I've been seeing that too. If it was 12 months year. But not 24. So sticking with my adsl.

Just think. In 1 years time, when prices come down. You will still be paying this high price. That's why I don't want contract.

Nooooooooo! Don't do that if the cost isn't much difference to what you have.

Some positives:

+ Better ping if gaming
+ Streaming without buffering.
+ Educating family, friends & neighbours about having new tech and less chance of copper being stolen.
+ Embracing new tech as opposed to dismissing it so simply.
+ Night Surfer if using Telkom Internet - UNLIMITED downloading between 12am - 7am [does not count towards your cap]
+ CCTV in HD to protect the community and have a local neighbourhood watch
+ Exclusive to areas like yours and so many of us are hungry for fibre [heehee]
+ Hosting a local community forum for others to discuss and keep it private.
+ If kids are around, let them enjoy Youtube streaming and KICK DSTV if one of the primaries is having it for them.
+++ Hundreds more that fail me from typing them out now.

- As you say contract BUT it is still new and being rolled out, you may only see Month2Month many years down [what i believe]
- Other FTTH players who have open access agreements will only allow "ADSL" accounts with iSPs that have an agreement with them. If Afrihost/Axxess doesn't for example then you cannot use them.
- others can fill this space

I urge you to reconsider :(.

BTW, what package are they coming to install for you?

Is there any way you can test the service? What if you regret it later that you didn't take it :D.

Any idea if that is 20/20?

No testing until its install. I still think I'm gonna wait. I prefer DSTV over all those other online services cause of Sport and CatchUP. Also don't know if its 20/20 or what.

Also one more thing. How do they get the cable to your house? run it in the existing Telephone line Conduit? Reason I'm asking is my house isn't exactly close the street. Its a bit "futher" back. And its only the telephone cable in that conduit anyway. or do they have to run one entirely new conduit cause that is gonna suck ass.

Ok, so i'm bringing this back again. Seems they have been laying fibre in Burgundy Estate over the past few weeks? Checked dark fibre coverage map and that's exactly where they were digging etc.

Anybody have more information on this?

Yep, I stopped and asked. They don't know whats its for, but the fibre was pulled up to the reservoir. I guess its the cell networks.

I have signed to purchase a property in Zarina, Burgundy Estate (due for completion in 2017). The developer said that all of the homes and apartments will have fiber fitted to the street, but they are still not sure who the service provider will be. I think rabie will do the same with all of the developments in the area still to come. This is good news for us, I think fiber service provider is coming soon!
