C&C Remastered Announcement from EA

https://www.openra.net

Play CnC, Red Alert and Dune 2000 with modern tweaks such as unit veterancy. If you have the old discs, First Decade or have The Ultimate Collection on Origin you can seamlessly copy the music to OpenRA as well.

What is OpenRA?
OpenRA is a project that recreates and modernizes the classic Command & Conquer real time strategy games. We have developed a flexible open source game engine (the OpenRA engine) that provides a common platform for rebuilding and reimagining classic 2D and 2.5D RTS games (the OpenRA mods).

This means that OpenRA is not restricted by the technical limitations of the original closed-source games: it includes native support for modern operating systems and screen resolutions (including Windows 10, Mac OS X, and most Linux distros) without relying on emulation or binary hacks, and features integrated online multiplayer.

While we love the classic RTS gameplay, multiplayer game design has evolved significantly since the early 1990's. The OpenRA mods include new features and gameplay improvements that bring them into the modern era:

  • A choice between “right click” and classic “left click” control schemes
  • Overhauled sidebar interfaces for managing production
  • Support for game replays and an observer interface designed for streaming games online
  • The “fog of war” that obscures the battlefield outside your units' line of sight
  • Civilian structures that can be captured for strategic advantage
  • Units gain experience as they fight and improve when they earn new ranks

OpenRA is 100% free, and comes bundled with three distinct mods. When you run a mod for the first time the game can automatically download the original game assets, or you can use the original game disks.

An interesting read behind some of the technical challenges faced by Westwood Studios

Geesus, developers are getting lazy...

Why not bring out a completely new C&C? Make money from a rewashed game just sounds extremely lazy...

C&C has been on a downward spiral and the last few games were trash. It's easier and cheaper to "rewash" a game. These are companies, not charities. They'll milk anything as much as they can. I'll still buy it as the original C&C was my favorite.

I'd buy it, loved the original c&c right up till the third one.

That happened later in the EA Era. Tib Sun, RA 2, RA 3 Yuris revenge, Generals were all great. Its Cnc 3 and 4 that were the stinkers that killed the series, 3 was still playable, 4 was horrible.
C&C 3 isn't a bad game. I don't see how it is a stinker, it is very well designed MM game. Red Alert 3 sucked, and Yuri's Revenge is a Red Alert 2 expansion. Red Alert 3 was overcomplicated.

The Anniversary series they are bringing out is to test the market. The new generation gamer isn't into this genre. Grey Goo was a last attempt at this and it didn't sell well. There is rumour that C&C 4 will be completely remade, possibly a eSports title.

It is expensive to make games nowadays, that is what drives in-game monetisation.

You're right, 3 wasn't too bad. I still like RA 3 as it's in the traditional rts format, but yes it's too complicated however it was fairly well received. I miss the classic C&Cs, was the first pc game I ever bought, played it on a good old pentium 100 with 16mb ram irrc.

I was probably the first person in town with a CD-ROM drive thanks to C&C.

I was in primary school.
I was battling with a level on the first Red Alert. Struggled with it my entire allotted gaming time. Just couldn't crack it.

That night I dreamed about it. I was playing the level while asleep. Then the tactic came to me. Everything was planned out as I slept.
The next day I spent my entire school day thinking about it. I finished my chores and homework after school and booted the game.

I was nervous. Could it be true?
I deployed the tactics from my dream. Executing it to the letter.
And
It worked! I beat the level!

Most euphoric feeling ever. A feeling never to be repeated with any other game since.

I absolutely loved Tiberian Sun and Generals...I enjoyed these more than Star Craft to be honest! I still play Gen Zero Hour with some mates (Hamachi Style) when we have some spare time during the week. Of course Red Alert series is top notch as well but RA3 and C&C3 onwards was just a deathspiral.

Lol, C&C3 was very positively received. Had good sales numbers and a very positive review score on Steam. RA3 and C&C4 spelled it's end.
