Damn sure he learnt his lesson, and hopefully the story will be widely publicised to deter others.

Cable thief critically injured

Johannesburg - The dangers of cable theft were highlighted again when a cable thief was shocked so badly that he could lose his limbs, paramedics said on Saturday.

A man was allegedly attempting to steal an electrical cable in Victory Park in Johannesburg on Friday when he was shocked by an electrical current of approximately 3 000 volts, said ER24 spokesperson Lloyd Krause.

Reacting to an emergency call, paramedics rushed the man to the Helen Joseph hospital, where he was being treated for third degree burns to three of his limbs, his chest and his face.

The man risked losing his limbs because of the seriousness of his wounds, Krause said.

He remained in a critical condition.

I feel no sympathy whatsoever. And since stupidity will never heed advice, I will feel no sympathy for the next bugger to do this either.

On the contrary they are fully aware of the dangers and risks involved.

The modus operandi within the syndicates is to draw lots among themselves.
The poor sap with the shortest straw is then given the task of driving a pick axe through the insulation of the cable to short out the cable and tripping the circuit breaker. They then proceed to steal as much cable as possible before the fault is reported and corrective measure are taken.

In many cases the person given the task of driving the pick axe through the cable is shocked to death by the high voltage.

This is really dumb (Darwinian selection). Is the pick-axe part a typo (a regular axe would be better)?

Tip for cable thieves
Wrap the wooden handle of the axe in masses of insulating material (non-slip rubber tube?) and wear gloves. This will prevent electrocution and death.

I have a better tip for the cable thieves - the above method was tried and failed, and the only reliable proven method is to wet the complete pick-axe and then wrap it in heavy duty foil.
Gloves of any kind have failed in the past, so for better control and accuracy it best not to use gloves of any kind.

Shocking.

I have an even better tip. Next time use an axe with an iron handle, it tends to conduct the electricity better and you wont have much chance of losing limbs.....because you'll be dead.

yes yes. best would be to thoroughly wet all clothing and hair so that the electrical current will bypass you and run through the water - flammable liquids also work pretty well. one must remember to not wear any rubberized boots or shoes of any sorts, as this will block the electrical current and electrocute you. if this doesnt work for you, one could always take up train surfing.

His comrades won't learn a lesson and neither will the comrades of the two idiots described below.

Two drown during baptism. 2010-01-10 07:52

Johannesburg - A priest and churchgoer drowned during a baptism in a river in Soweto on Saturday afternoon, Johannesburg emergency services said.

The priest was baptising the young woman in the Snake River near Impala Road in Dobsonville when the current swept them away, said spokesperson Nana Radebe.

Some of the 15 other churchgoers present tried to save the two, but the water levels were too high, added Radebe.

The region had heavy showers on Friday.

Emergency personnel and police divers found the priest's body, but were still searching for the woman's at 18:30, said Radebe.
