Can anyone identify this spider?

Notice mom's legs behind the nest (FWIW, this was on the metal awning on the veranda).

Rain spiders... Love them, mainly for the reaction they get from others. They're like cuddly puppies compared to this:

The first time I saw a big Rain spider like that, I jumped over my couch; since all I saw was this huge shadow of the spider against the wall and body bobbing up and down between its legs as it walks.

I didn't want to touch it nor kill it and so my wife called the next door neighbor (also a woman) to capture it - how embarrassing:wtf:

Yeah, that is embarrassing. At least you are still alive. You could have died. :D
