can i get faster than 4mb?

maybe i am reading this wrong, but it seems the stats on my router says i can get up to 12mb for download speed. but when i call telkom, they say i can only get 4mb and not more.

am i reading this wrong? Router is a d-link DSL-2750U

You should be able to go up to 10mbps without a problem however there is probably a soft limit for your DSLAM which telkom have not raised, not much you can do about this unfortunately.

The modem will just tell you max it thinks it can get, using the current connection details.

It doesn't mean that Telkom will allow it. You are probably connecting to one of the old exchanges that don't support more than 4MB.

You can check at http://www2.telkom.co.za/checkadsl/ - put in your phone number and it will tell you the max speed supported for your line.

The other information source is to look at the Telkom coverage map (couldn't find a working url right away). You can put your address in and it will show you all the Telkom options available at your address.

10MB requires ADSL2+, whereas 4MB only requires an older ADSL connection. In your router, go to the Status page and open the Statistics tab. The first entry in the ADSL section on the page shows the type of connection. For ADSL2+ it will show "ADSL_2plus", which mine changed to after applying for a 10Mb upgrade.

Edit: Looking at your stats, you are not on an ADSL2+ line. You should see a max possible speed of over 15MBps if you were.

In my case, the ability to go to 10Mb was only implemented quite recently, which I discovered on the map. The first time I called Telkom I was told it was not possible, when it was. Eventually Telkom called me as part of a marketing campaign and I was upgraded.

You can. By the looks of it you are still syncing on G.dmt which means if you dslam support higher than 4Mbps then your upgrade would take time for a technician to do a port change.

In terms of your line stats you should have no problem even getting 20Mbps but it all depends on what dslam/exchange you are connected to.

Your DSLAM may have already been upgraded and the telkom system hasn't been upgraded yet.
