Sometimes you just have to cut your losses. But I'm sure lots will survive, Multiploos have committed to continuing the support for local productions - though judging what's said in other articles, they've cut down on new productions it seems.

Canal+ axes Showmax

MultiChoice has announced that it will shut down Showmax, ending the streaming platform that was once positioned as the centrepiece of its growth strategy in Africa.

The Showmax board made the decision following a comprehensive review of the company's streaming activities, MultiChoice said in a statement.

“The decision to discontinue Showmax services will not involve any retrenchments. The Group will be engaging and supporting employees through various transition options.”

They're gonna start a new streaming service, or move them to whatever one Canal+ might have already in Africa, aren't they...

Does speak of the overhead attitude though - they're committed to streaming success. I'm betting the streaming technical quality also improves this year.

It makes sense from their perspective to strip SA of everything but core functions as they think on a global scale and having all these smaller apps and business units isn't very efficient. We should get better streaming out of it but at some point we will lose local content and may have to listen to ausie/english commentators when our teams play.

Here and there was some decent content buried between endless shows about people pomping or wanting to pomp.
If you don't own a home server with your own content the price was probably worth it.

The good thing is they decided to cancel instead of attempting to milk it into profitability, that definitely would not have worked.

Definitely possible, though much of the SA DStv market only want international content really. Aussie commentators...

But can't see them getting rid of domestic entertainment elsewhere in Africa, it's a staple diet.

Just yesterday I was going through the apps on my TV and wondered why dstv stream and ShowMax were different apps.
