Canal+ axes Showmax

The need for supporting local content production enough is a valid one, for sure, but it's not the mainstream go to for people looking for entertainment.

It does look likely that some of the content will end up on the DStv channels, we need to wait and see.

But for all the DSTV app's faults and bugs, I really don't want to lose the ability to schedule/watch cloud recordings and rewind channels 24h. Both of these features are big value adds for me.

Timeshift, NPVR etc are pretty standard these days on live streaming. It would be really odd if they didn't have it.

Yeah hopefully they refunded or it's moved to the new platform

Different management team of course. But they had great deals when they replaced Showmax 1.0 Pro (that included all football) with Showmax 2.0 (that did not have football on TV).

In my case they offered a deal of paying R350p/m for 12/24 months to get DSTV Compact Plus & Showmax, which was a no-brainier as that meant I paid the same, still got all the same content plus Kyknet & other channels I didn't have before. Compact Plus was essentially offered to me at a discount of R200-250 at the time (and they've converted me into a repeat customer so well done to them). So hopefully something similar as a customer retention strategy for people in this situation.

There is a dstv app and a showmax app. Put the movies and series into the dstv app and fire all the showmax staff.
That's exactly what Canal Plus are planning to do. There will be only one Canal Plus app for it all which is probably why they are shutting down Showmax. It's bad news for those of us who only want to pay R49 and not subscribe to DSTV. That will no longer be an option.

They will probably introduce a Dstv package to replace show max.

So are we getting the Canal+ streaming service once Showmax closes down or...??

On the contrary I think it will be iROKOtv and Dstv app for the Dstv content. People with unused Showmax vouchers might get to use them for iROKOtv (Canal+).

What they will probably do is have an "old showmax" option where you get what you got on showmax for the price of what you used to pay.

They have just managed this change in a very bad way, they should have decided what the options were going to be and then make an annoucement.

Unlikely. Why would they keep Showmax if it's losing billions?

They wont - like they said.

They own the content though so will just show it on DSTV and give you the option of just getting that content.
I haven't done a comparison but I think there may even some overlap.

The saving is that they wont have to pay for the running of showmax, there will most likely be a lot of culling as well but I do expect a DSTV streaming account for R100 that covers most of what you get on showmax.

If the dump all the streaming rights then someone else will just pick that stuff up (like Netflix)
Remember that what we see on Netflix and other platforms is diminished because Multichoice own the local streaming rights.

Local content is the only thing at risk here. Even so, other parties can pick up that content if its abandoned.

Exactly. Just introduce a movies and series package for R49-R99.

Yeah, the question I raised:

Canal+ to end Showmax subscriptions on 1 April 2026, will axe streamer on 30 April, as content moves to DStv Stream and later Canal+ app

Canal+'s Showmax will end subscriptions for its doomed video streaming service from 1 April 2026 as Showmax content will temporarily be moved to DStv Stream, and later Canal+'s app, also known as Canal+.

Showmax will stop on 30 April 2026.

Earlier this month, Canal+ announced that it's ending the loss-making Showmax that it said could have destroyed MultiChoice.

"Showmax is starting a new chapter and your favourite shows are getting a shiny new home on DStv Stream. Even better, they'll be joining a bigger world of entertainment, all in one place," MultiChoice said on Wednesday evening in a message to Showmax subscribers.

This is, however, not the real new "one place".

After the move of Showmax content to DStv DStream, the content will be moved again, once Canal+ rolls out its own Canal+ video streaming service in South Africa and elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa within a few months.

31 March 2016 will be the very last day for subscribers to renew a Showmax subscription or to redeem any outstanding vouchers. From 1 April 2026, absolutely no new Showmax subscriptions and renewals will be available or work.

Existing Showmax subscribers will be able to continue watching content "as usual, until your subscription ends, or until the end of April 2026 - whichever comes first".

So far, there's been no press release from MultiChoice or Showmax to the media.

"as content moves to @DStv Stream and later Canal+ app:"

Theres the awnser to my earlier question then. They are stripping all local apps from the market and consolidating into the canal apps.

Which I guess makes 100% sense. There's no need to maintain multiple apps which all basically do the same thing.

Yip, I said earlier it makes business sense to go that route.
Its just a bit sad as many folks in that industry went through multichoice at some point in their career. Its a pretty big loss to the tech industry.
