Canal+ axes Showmax

If they had football/soccer on the Android TV app, instead of on mobile only, a lot of people would have jumped all over it with glee. Even if they doubled the price.

Edit:

If they tripled the price of the Mobile subscription and it was available to watch on a TV, the majority of those folks, would still subscribe.

This, I used to subscribe to Showmax 2.0 when the football was still on the streaming service and then when they stopped it and only made it phone or tablet accessible. I cancelled and tried DSTV stream which was so poor that I then decided to find international streaming services to watch on. If they made the DSTV stream app as well working as what Showmax was I might reconsider joining again.

Does anyone know what features the Canal+ app offers compared to the DSTV Stream app?

I haven't been able to find any detail online.

Given the noises they have been making thus far, it's possible they might eventually consider consolidating the DSTV app into the Canal+ app as well. Why develop 2 apps and underlying infrastructure if you can do only one (from their perspective)?

But for all the DSTV app's faults and bugs, I really don't want to lose the ability to schedule/watch cloud recordings and rewind channels 24h. Both of these features are big value adds for me.

I have been wasting my money on a Showmax subscription for years. Very seldom watched anything on it because I could not get used to watching movies and stuff without surround sound. But the kids love it. Now I will have no choice but to cancel it :)
Showmax in its current form supports Dolby 5.1.
Showmax originally only had Stereo

But if you had an Amp that Supported Dolby Prologic II, you would switch to that and it will convert the 2.0 sound into a simulated 5.1 sound. You see stereo has hidden cues which can be extracted to create the center, read and subwoofer channels also.

Haha, you clearly don't keep up to date with the news here. Nope, many of the channels that were threatened with removal (by the suppliers) were saved last minute.

The rest, quite an exaggeration.. as usual
Nope they are actually looking at it now.

Why did Canal+ buy Multichoice again?

Main original belief was for further French penetration into the African market, but they have since made it clear they intend boosting international content and looking after the SA market too.

Could they just be stalling for time and be less interested? Doubtful, we've been more than 50% of the group's success in the past, and it would be a ton's worth of assets to just treat as a side product.

I'm still confident we'll see some good things coming. Not so confident about them undoing the billions of tech bugs..

On my surround sound system Netflix, Disney, Apple and Amazon Prime works perfectly. Showmax does not. I therefore seriously doubt that Showmax supports anything and if it does, it uses some obscure standard that does not work with mainstream surround sound systems.

The idiots! Showmax is the only good thing they have. Obviously Canal Plus decided we shouldn't have African content for R49 when they can fleece us R399 for DSTV Compact. To hell with this company.

Why is it making a loss? Probably a jobs for pals program. Why have 2 apps? Its like eskom having 3 ceo's.
