Cannot connect to certain international sites

What the hell happened last night, and specifically last night to the network in Durban?

I was trying to postwhore in Off Topic, and i would be lucky to get 1 post in 5 through... Trying to log in to any site would just not happen.... It was very weird....

I've had no problems with myADSL last night. Maybe rpm is limiting you! :D

The problem with the international connectivity seems to be an undersea cable problem between Miami and Portugal.

I see Telkom is scheduling more downtime on the 18th....

I shall hunt rpm down if that contest was unfairly weighted against me.. :D

It just seemed to me that anything requiring postbacks etc in HTTP were not working properly.... as if there was a routing problem....

Telkom actually scheduling downtime?... wow.. thats a change...

Its so bad on the South Coast we are using dial up its faster!!!

The problem here is not just international links some local ones are just as bad!!!

Snap, this must be something different. Send me some details.

ToxicBunny, as well please. Although I thought you can sort this stuff out with your magic wand? After all, You are the fat fairy! ;)

If this is true, why do I only have this problem with Vodacom, surely it will affect my other providers also. (I have no problem at work or via Virgin mobile)

It should affect anyone using the Telkom routes out of the country. I'm not the expert but it sounds like these other paths you're referring to are finding other ways out the country?

SAIX even have it on their website, stating in the Affected column "All customers"

We'll hopefully have a clearer answer soon.

Just did a simple test. I tried opening www.altera.com and it works perfectly. Then did a search on www.google.co.za. It loads the Google page but searching on a topic does not take me to the new page. So I did exactly the same thing on a PC running on a leased line. It loaded the search results in a fraction of a second.

So some sites load, others not. This sucks. Any idea when normality will return?

I've been having problems with my SAIX ADSL account over the last 2 days - very sluggish, also noticed similar at times using my ISDSL account. Haven't been on HSDPA since Friday when Telkodemonopolies necromanced my ADSL line back to life.

Maybe VM is using satellite bandwidth?

This is proving to be the wierdest problem. It's been driving me nuts for two nights now.

First off, I've had no hassles with ADSL which I use during the day (ISP Telkomsa - please don't yell at me).

v3g at night has been a totally different experience - but it isn't the usual dropped packets problem.

I'm finding what loads does load really fast, but here's what is wierd - if a page gets stuck, no matter how often you refresh, reload, go back to it, it gets stuck at exactly the same place! This with absolute no-cache settings and dynamic content. Logging in/out of secure areas is absolutely hopeless. Seems to apply strictly to off-shore hosted sites.

There might be a volume bottleneck somewhere due to cable issues whatever, but the problem is being "managed" with some of the wierdest caching methods I've ever seen. Not that it helps in my case due to my specific needs - ISP caches are a nightmare.

I was chatting online last night with another tech to identify the cause of problem through a process of elimination; he was having no problems at all where I was struggling - he was connected on the IS backbone. Makes a change - IS giving less connectivity issues than Telkom/v3g  Normally he's the one taking strain.

Anyway - long and short of it, it's not affecting all ISPs, applies to international, hasn't affected my ADSL Telkomsa service, and the way the problem is being managed renders using v3g effectively useless for me.

I think we need a policy of pro-rata discounts when service goes substandard - get a bit of motivation going here to whip the real culprits. Time to fix is no big deal when the consumer is still paying for sub-standard service

Interesting. Virgin isn't giving the same problem - if that helps eliminate possible causes.

I see the problem is still here this morning.

A thought occured during the night. FTP has been a nightmare for pretty well the whole month. Maybe international connectivity has been shaped?

Ok. I've just tested v3g vs ADSL with Telkomsa ISP back to back. v3g breaks - ADSL works just fine.

Something's hosed.

It's not a speed issue. Unless you count the non-delivery of certain files as a speed issue

I'll pm exactly where I'm having the problem consistently. But FTP access - we're going to have to know each other a whole lot better before that happens ;)

Me still having the problem as well. Couldn't post pretty much at all on myadsl last night, couldn't log in to any secure sites, google work at best 10% of the time.

I shall do some tests just now, and PM you V3G now that I'm on a connection that works ;)

Just PM'ed you. I'm not seeing the same problem as you, (my logout works), so I've asked brad and tazz to help test, as they're also in banana country. I assume that's where you are at the moment?

I'm also having problems with international sites.

Some work...some don't.

www.hotmail.com - doesn't load.

www.yahoo.co.uk - can log into mail, but as soon as I want to view a mail message, then it times out.

www.google.co.za - searches works fine, but...

www.google.com - cannot search on the .com site

www.hellkom.co.za - starts to load the page then stops.

www.gizmodo.com - same as Hellkom

www.sapuzzleclub.co.za - local site that doesn't load

I could list a million websites I visit, some international sites work and some don't.

On top of only some of the sites loading, they also take EXTREMELY slow to load.

:L:

EDIT: I couldn't even post this message on the boards, I tried twice, I had to log on to my work LAN to post.
