I have finally managed to sort out line sync issues and the like and am perfectly able to browse the net but unfortunately I cannot receive calls on the landline at the same time.

Called the service provider, they said a filter should help, confirmed with Telkom and went out and bought a splitter/filter. Unfortunately the problem persists. When dialing the landline, the phone rings once and then there's static on the line.

Called Telkom again and they said, the line is working perfectly apparently it could be a router/modem problem. Questions is though, why can I then use the phone to call out but cannot receive them?

Could some please help me identify the problem, has someone else experienced this?

Welcome to the forum...

Not an expert on this but someone will help you soon enough...

Can you receive phone calls on your land line when you've disconnected the ADSL modem?

Do you have any other devices connected to the telephone line, besides for the splitter/filter (and then the telephone + ADSL modem connected to the splitter)?

I had a similar problem,My modem lights flashed on an incoming call, I found the wall connection corroded, cleaned it up and sorted.

Nope, no other devices attached to the splitter/filter. It seems that I can't receive calls at all now. It used to work when I unplugged everything but I tried it yesterday and no calls are coming through. Got the filter/splitter from another place but I believe these things are all pretty standard. Have logged a fault with Telkom but when I spoke to them last, they said my line was fine. We'll have to see. For now there is little I can do until the problem is identified. Maybe it is the wall connection, one can but speculate. Thanks for all the replies though. Will keep you updated:).

Try another filter.

I've heard a lot of stories about
different filters and how they
can also fail.

POTS filter = DONT USE TELKOM Cr@P. Go 2 any hardware and buy a new filter. Then check back here if the problem persists

I was originally using a Telkom one which has been working fine for years. When this problem started I replaced it with one I got from the local Computer World, "Exculsus Z-blocker". It made no difference.

What a load of nonsense. Telkom's hardware is very good quality (telephones, filters etc). Your hate is clouding your objectivity.

In all my years dealing with Telkom I have never had a piece of equipment that came from them that hasn't been a problem child. The router they supply < marconi's > are of inferior quality and fail at the drop of a hat. Al though i have never used a telkom filter so have no experience with their build quality or functionality, the proof is in the pudding as i usually throw them in the back of my drawer and go buy a proper wall splitter.

@ Maddmatt

No news from the OP? I'm having the same problem. I started a thread before I found this one:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/299541-Netgear-ADSL-Router-intefering-with-phone-line

I have managed to sort out my problem. After getting a different filter, which made no difference, I called the OP who confirmed that everything was working fine on their side.

I then decided that the only outstanding issue could be with Telkom and I called them. They then reset the port and after a couple of hours everything was working perfectly. Be sure to ask them to reset the port, some operators wouldn't know what to do otherwise.

Hope this helps.

I just did that and it worked.
Thanks :D

Make sure you have an actual POTS ADSL filter.... not just a splitter. You can only get them from telkom IIRC

This has started up again! Guess I better report it as a fault. How can I make sure they fix this? I don't want to have to call them every week to reset the line :(

I notice that you can still answer the phone while the other person is hearing the crackling. It's as if the line is being answered before we pick up the phone and the person just hears crackling until we answer.

Crackling means a problem with your line. What happened to me a few years back with crackling on the line, they found that the line laying in a hole close to my house was full of water. The emptied the water and position the line so that it would not lay in water if the hole happened to fill up again with water.

@Maddmatt
I think with the current rains (if in Jhb ) etc. you may experience this problem more often. As this interferes with your line, it would automatically affect your adsl. You can only reset it but the line fault needs to be attended to so best report it.
