Cape Town CBD downtime

You know, for someone whose in IT and not a Neotel customer.

Service is getting worse... soon I'll have no service or a 56k connection - currently, I'm bordering on the server just being WITHIN average!

Sorry, I don't understand?

You signed up for a wireless service that reaches a maximum of 2Mbit, but clearly states average speeds of between 300kbps and 700kbps. According to your last speed test, you're getting 466kbps which is within the stated average.

Is there something I am missing? It seems you are getting the service as described before you signed up?

Please let me know if I am wrong.

Apologies for not responding earlier today - I have been busy gathering information regarding the upgrades and the downtime.

I have not completed this exercise yet and I will have an update for you by COB on Tuesday.

gdiza / PostmanPot - this is also in response to your PM(s).

Postman I think that you misunderstand the problem...when I wanted to sign up my coverage was only fair...so I didn't sign up..WHY?? Because this means I will get the lowest speed that they state (300kbps). That is why I waited untill I have an excelent signal so I can expect speeds in the mid 600kbps...as he was receiving full dl speeds he was a happy customer but now the speed is taken away gradualy..dont know about you but its p*ssing off alot of customers...

Reminds me of my Telkom line where I got a dl speed of 4Mbps for a day & half...then 2.7Mbps for another 3 & then way down to 1.1Mbps...Atleast telkom specifies its an 1Mbps line but if your lucky you can get up to 4Mbps...Neotel says it depends on your reception of which mine is 4bars & an RSSI of 64 (which should give me atleast 600-700) BUT with a dl of 100kbps & up of 2kbps.....

Bit more clear?!?

Good day MR Neotel...would it be anyhow possible to give us a more or less idea of what is causing the problem..have you found out if those servers in joburg causing the huge latency is one of/the main prob & when speeds will return to normal or will speeds only pick up when the maintanance is complete on the list you supplied? If you could please look into my area aswell as ive heard nothing about the PTA East more specificaly Moreletapark area?

Kind regards & thanks in advance!

I did more tests over the last hour.

Check this:

Test 1
Last Result:
Download Speed: 53 kbps (6.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 47 kbps (5.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

5 minutes later...

Test 2
Last Result:
Download Speed: 246 kbps (30.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 28 kbps (3.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

10 minutes later...

Test 3
Last Result:
Download Speed: 75 kbps (9.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 35 kbps (4.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

I've resumed my downloads now and I'm watching them jump from 10± to 50± to 40± to 10± to 20±.

This all from getting 150±

My RSSI is also very good apparently and 4 bars.

Something is going on.

When I first started on Neotel, as theenemesis said, I was happy, because I was getting 150± (with peaks at 200 now and again for a bit)

Then someone else said, wait for it, you're happy now, give it a bit, then you're going to join 'our world' and as he said, my downloads (which I basically use my connection for) started to drop and get worse and worse.

I'm patient, I haven't thrown my toys outta the cot just yet, because we have Neotel rep here... but this is getting pathetic now.

I've watched my connection go from EXCELLENT to HORRIBLE.

... bit of humor here... i'm watching the Barack Obama Presidential Address [02-24-2009] that I downloaded.

Everytime he says "United States of America" I imagine he says "Neotel"

:D

Quite a bit clearer, yes. I suppose having an "excellent" signal should mean better speeds. But does it state this anywhere?

*edit*

All I'm saying is that from my position it seems like they are covered in stating what the average speeds will be.

Fair enough.

 @ Test 1 and 3.

And guys, I'd like to apologise for biting the Neotel rep's head off both in private and publically.

I'm just frustrated - when there is a problem, I want it fixed, when I send a PM, I want a reply - it's just how I am.

:)

Forgiveness is devine - but never pay full price for late pizza ;)

Not that ive read of but as you can imagine it doesnt state anywhere that you have an excellent signal FOR THE TIME BEING now do they...?

Which is surely why they state the average speeds that one will get most of the time?

Which means...if I receive a weak signal i will still average between a 300 AND 700 dl...?

Take a 3g card...do you receive better speeds or the same speeds if you have full strength to say 1 or 2 bars of signal?

Same with iBurst...when do you get better speeds?

Making a voice call from your cellphone...can you hear the person just as clearly with 1bar of signal against full signal?

The point I am trying to make is logic. Why else would they state on the website that yu have fair, good or excellent signal if all of them would perform at the same speeds????

We're in agreement.

I'm still harping on about them being able to cover their asses.

I picked up my device this afternoon and was told it has been activated. When I got home and plugged it in I was unable to connect to the internet (It is unable to reach the server), I am also not able to make a call (Destination number restricted). Is this in anyway related to the downtime in CBD?

Have you set it up properly?

Installed that horrible Connection manager using the CD and setup your username and password and dialed in?

If yes, then maybe... call 0800 333 636 and ask the Tech people.

It seems to be like a movie line, "Trust no one"

Autopage put my order status as cancelled when they did the final activation. I do have to say I found the Neotel helpdesk very helpful.

It's all about finding the right person to help you - that is hard enough and when you do find that person, you'll get sorted - the rest should not be employed because they suck any stupid excuse outta the thumb to get you off the phone.

Also... have you guys noticed, if you call Neotel now, you almost guarenteed to hear "We are experiencing high call volume"

I called Neotel alot when I was signing up and I NEVER heard that, after I got it, I called a few times and never heard it, now when I call, I hear it all the time.

At around 3:45am last night, my connection came right, started FLYING!!!!!!!! 150KB ±

4:30am my phone connection dropped, 100, 90, 80, like a count down and bam, NO SERVICE.

I almost cried... haha.
