Cape Town Fire/Smoke Alert Thread

Tomorrow morning at 6am, Adrian, our PR guy for the VWS will be commenting on Cape Talk about the fires in CPT.

Tune in and listen ;)

Still burning this morning- just not as 'frantically' as before thanks to the wind having died down - but where is that d@mn rain? How ironic to hear of roads closed due to flooding and here we sit in a heat wave with fires all around!
I even tried hanging out washing last night - but still no rain!

Well, Vergelegen is mostly mop up apparently.
I might not get to go at all it seems... but we'll see how the day progresses.

Still burning in the fynbos above and behind Sir Lowry's Pass village area - lots of smoke. The other areas burning seem to all be high up in the mountains.
Hey Gdiza you can still come on over and stand by at our place!!!
I am going to arrange for someone to come out and give us a lesson on fire prevention measures and help us devise a good strategy for evacuation of our estate (about 38 properties) once all this is over. I think we are all too laid back as far as this is concerned and this has been a big wake-up call for all of us.

Hey Guys and Girls. Hey gdiza, it is me, the other VWS member that resides in the area!;)

But this is the reality - people only wake up after something bad has happened.
But It's good either way :)

Yep, that is me!

Finally!!!

Now you can update everyone with all the awesome info you provide me.

Seems I might not get to go tomorrow :(

I FINALLY get a day off and I can't go :(

And I don't want to 'hope' for it because that's just wrong. :(

I must tell you guys about Monday evening! I was on a winefarm above Knorhoek, and what I saw there was something I haven't seen in a long time! There was several fire vortexes going! This is something the average person does not want to see, nor want to see it close to their houses!

Please tell us more detail - we have watched some amazing things from our place via the binocs!!!

I live in the Strand and from my flat I have a clear view of the entire mountain range.

Ok, here goes. I was with several tankers attending to a Pine plantation fire at the wine farm. The fire burned past us on the mountain and started burning a Pine plantation further down between us and a fairly large dam. The flames was now basically on a 200deg arc in front of us. Almost trapping us on this farm. The flames were 10 to 20 meters high, basically double the size of the Pine trees and it was dark orange. HOT in other words. Next minute I heard the noise like a chopper trying to take off. From our vantage point we saw and heard the vortex gaining strength. The funnel shot up past us into the smoke clouds and beyond. The pine trees bend inwards towards the vortex. It is now basically a tornado of fire and flame. It consumes trees and everything that gets in its way! Hectic I tell you! These don't last long luckily, but when it dies down it rains down clouds of embers and spots everywhere! Several large fires down the slopes flared up. (Spotfires) While I was there several of these vortexes formed that evening!
