Cape Town Fire/Smoke Alert Thread

No, it is getting washed today. I will then have to see if I can get the hole in my shirt fixed. Luckily the fence only ripped the yellow shirt!

My top was washed on Sunday, my pants however is a completely another story. :D It's lying somewhere in my flat, still dirty ;) haha.

I'm wondering when I'm getting my Battle Jacket back too... this lady has had it since Thursday, I'm going to moan at her tomorrow! :(

satellite photo from 11:35 this morning, still a huge amount of smoke.

Huge amount of smoke, lots of fires still burning (surprise!!!) and one visible from Somerset West on mountainside above Lourensford/Vergelegen.
And at the foot of Sir Lowry's the wind is just starting again.

Fire fighters extinguish Somerset West blaze
Eyewitness News | 2 Hours Ago

Fire fighters have managed to extinguish the fire burning in the Somerset West area.

The fire has been burning since last month and threatened two of South Africa’s most prestigious wine estates.

The damage is estimated to be in the region of R20m.

Cape Town Fire Services Sherri-Leigh Koopman said fire personnel were monitoring the situation.

Hopefully they can keep it out when the wind gets up tomorrow.

SFX, are you maybe going to goto Vergelegen today if they do a call out?

I got permission from work to go, so I'm all ready (kit and everything is here at work), just need the call out to come and I'm off to base!

I need my team mate - so come!

Still lots of smoke low in the Vergelegen area and early morning I could see a patch of flames high up in the mountains on that side - thank goodness nothing yet at Sir Lowry's, just some smoke from other side the mountains and the smell of wood burning.
And wind!

SFX, when we have nothing to do at the next fire, please will you remind me to ask you to look at my first aid kit - I want another opinon on if I have everything and if not, what I need to get.

Quote from another forum: (why am I not surprised)
Candle+plastic bottle = Job

Some of the bigger farms hired temporary staff to help fight the initial fires, which of course resulted in a nice, overtime paying income.
When the fires where extinguished the income stopped, so some of the "casual workers" apparently got innovative and started the fires again, and again.

Seems to met that they will have to use Firemen, WoF and volunteers only.
Paying people to help is going to fuel the fire.

samisty, till there is proof of the above, it's just heresay, a rumor or story started by someone.

Don't get caught up in that - doesn't help anyone.

I hear you gdiza, but (and sorry for this pun) there is no smoke without a fire. I believe that this is just one aspect of the whole sorry, sad mess we have here, but I do believe there is a strong element of truth in it as I have had evidence from other sources as well.

I think if SFX and I sat down and thought about it (hard enough) we could come up with 100x different stories on how these fires started and such.

Maybe, just maybe samisty... MAYBE this fire was started by someone, but now, the heat, the wind, etc etc etc is (to me at least) is what is pushing this fire.

Who cares anyways - it's too far gone now to look for "who to blame" anyways... now the goal of everyone should be clear... putting it out and putting it properly.

I can't wait for the headlines of the papers to read "DEAD OUT" (Referring to the fires in Cape Town are FINALLY out completely)

Not only do I hope for it to be "dead out", but for the necessary people to have learnt some valuable lessons here. I know our area is now relatively "safe" for about 7 years before another major fire in the fynbos, but if it helps other areas as well, at least there will have been one positive light!
Then again, like Eskom, I guess some of the lights are "dead out"
