Cape Town Fire/Smoke Alert Thread

I've just been told the following by a friend, so take it however you want, regarding the fire on signal hill:

Apparently he started one at the scout camp, then some guy caught him there - after which he phoned in a description and they caught him trying to start another one further down the hill

Fire and or explosion about 45mins back at Canal Walk.
Looked like one of the towers on the upper deck or perhaps the hotel to the West.

Anyone got any info on that?
Seems to be out now, but huge columns of black smoke, then white and then out.
Fire lasted for about 15-20 mins it would seem.

I've just chatted to a friend in CTFES, he has heard nothing, if anything happens at CW, and it is serious, he would know about it.

If you see the smoke over Epping area, that is training being done by CTFES (smoke room I think)

There is more smoke further towards Lakeside etc, I've heard nothing else about that, but then again I haven't really asked.

Did seem kinda serious, going to be watching the news sites to see if anything gets reported.
 
A colleague got some pics from a bud who works at Canal Walk and he took some pics as the fire happened.

Fire at Century City

fire broke out at Century City's air-conditioning cooling tower earlier on Friday, forcing the complex's management to close off one of its entrances.

Century City facilities manager Eugene Lombard said there had been no injuries and that their team had the situation under control.

Lombard said security guards cordoned off Entrance 10 to the complex.

The fire brigade scrambled with urgency and members of the public made urgent calls when a pall of black smoke began rising above Century City at about 10.15am on Friday.

But the fire, a flare-up in a large industrial air-conditioning unit away from the Canal Walk shopping mall and densely populated office buildings. It was quickly doused, a city fire control spokeswoman said.

The fire damaged only the air-conditioning unit and no other areas of the Century City complex were threatened, she said.

Canal Walk spokeswoman Camilla Lor said work was being done in the centre's air-conditioning cooling tower and sparks had set fibreglass blanketing inside the tower alight.

Got a few PM's this evening with regards to a 'fire smell' all around CPT.

I haven't heard anything from any of my contacts, possible smog smell I guess.
 
Hi all,

As it stands right now, I probably will not be fire fighting with the VWS this coming fire season.
There is another unit and I will be joining that unit instead so I'll still be doing my volunteer thing, just not for VWS (at fires at least) - however, I might help them with other things.
The reasons behind this, I would rather not go into. :)
 
Been smelling smoke since last night in Southern Suburbs. Where's it coming from? Winelands way?
 
False Bay covered in smoke. Looks thickest out Sir Lowry's Pass way

Apparently a fire coming over from grabouw near steenbras dam?
Helderberg fire dept say its not yet in their area so they are not yet on scene.

Also heard there is a fire out kleinmond side
