Capitec Bank keeps fees unchanged

Hi

My friends have repeatedly told me how much cheaper Capitec Bank is, but I'd decided to remain loyal to my bank as I didn't feel that it was charging me a ridiculous amount. But having heard that Capitec wont be increasing its bank charges, I'll admit that the option to switch banks is very tempting. I just might open a Capitec bank account soon.

Do you know how much you do spend at your bank? Have you calculated it?

Well done Capitec for not increasing your fees, you making a bold move, and hopefully the big 4 banks will try emulate.

Costs R10 to open an account and will take you only a few minutes. Opened two accounts over the holidays, one for me (a savings) and one for the maid. Excellent service on both occassions.

My main account is with Standard Bank but it seems I will move over to Capitec sooner than later.

Tempted to open a Capitec savings account as well, just to test the waters

Note that Capitec doesn't do large loans or long term loans.

So if you might be looking at a home loan or revolving credit facility, you'll have to switch banks in any case.

I opened a Capitec account last year in August.

It's been nothing but brilliant. It was supposed to be a savings account, but it's just been so great to have and use that I've ended up doing all sorts of things with it. I actually earn interest!! Swiping is free! Paying for petrol with my Capitec card - free! Internet Banking? Free!

Interest rate is 6%. Even with just R2000 in my account, I earn waaaay more interest than what there are charges on the account.
The Capitec Internet Banking token device was R125 to get initially, and you had to have some cash on hand to deposit to open the account.
The cash deposit had a minor fee (I paid 2.63 to deposit R350, which is 0.75%) when I opened the account at the bank.
Transferring money from the Capitec account to an external account was R2.50 (for R3000 transfer).
Things like sending an email proof of payment or SMS proof of payment are 40c each, but they allow you to download the proof of payment yourself free of charge, so you can mail it through yourself. The fee is essentially for the convenience of not having to download, save and email it through yourself.
Pulling statements, downloading statements etc are all also free.

You can also set alerts on your account for IN/OUT above certain amounts, email or sms. If someone tries to take more than X amount of money out my account I get an sms telling me about it.

They only have ONE account type/ONE card. It's called the Global One account. It doesn't matter whether you're getting a loan, opening a savings account or whatever.. you get a Global One account and Global One debit card.
Under this single account you can open multiple sub-accounts which can be used for different things.

Their internet banking is basic and easy to use, I've never experienced downtime with it. It's not confusing and complex. All very simple.
Logging into Capitec Internet Banking is also such a breeze and not stressful. They have a self-chosen username and self-chosen password. Add token code and voila! None of this crazy complex security like Absa has. I can't remember my account number - it's HUGE! With Capitec I don't have to remember it, just my username and password and have my token on me to generate a code for login, adding new beneficiaries etc.

The fees are so low, and the interest is so good, and the service is so down-to-earth and nice, you really should give them a try.

Only reason why I've decided to stick with Standard Bank for my salary. Also not all bank accounts count towards your credit history. I've had a eplan account with Standard Bank for 11yrs and cannot use it as a credit history, had to upgrade to cheque account this month.

Ironic that I've not even had my cheque account for two weeks and I already qualify for some nice credit :)

Also I pay R99 and get enough free transactions (actually saving R40 pm from my old savings account).

If you have a Telkom phone in your name, an Edgars acoount etc, you have a credit history.
You don't need a cheque account - its a waste of money.

I pay over 200 a month :wtf:

R10 000 per day for debit card purchases.

Can you change this figure? I see you can change it on the ATM withdrawel limit but it seems a bit light on that explanation.

Been with Capitec for more than a year. And for personal banking, it just works!

Sent from my GT-I9000 using MyBroadband Android App

Today I opened an account with capitec but the service to get the damn thing open is was just awful took more than 5 hours...
Firstly they had some excuse about the insurance policy not being accepted then they sent my to ABSA to get a stamped document stating my residential address. After wasting an hour at ABSA to get the document and driving back to Capitec I was told that they won't accept this document. I completely lost it. I was livid to say the least.

They lady just refused to try and help me and after I had spent hours on the phone to get their stupid Fica people to accept the document she did not even apologize, she just had this smirk on her face. All this to get away from ABSA. Banks are useless and the Fica regulations are making them even worse. We live in the digital age and now Fica comes along and says it must be a posted original document....Fica seriously needs to rethink the whole proof of address issue. The same insurance policy was accepted by ABSA so why did capitec have an issue with it. Bah..getting angry all over.

Does that lady work in the Carlswald Capitec?

Sorry to hear that oke.
The few times that I'd had to go into a branch, inluding opening my account, didn't take me more than 10 minutes.

Yes...she does. Buthemelo or something like that. Does she have a reputation?

No, I had a query and that was the worst Capitec experience I have ever had and she had this smug expression on her face because she couldn't help me. Your decription of her attitude sounded exactly the same and reminded me of her.

Well Capitec just called to ask how I experienced their service. Told them my story and hopefully they can educate their staff to be more helpful and actually try to get the job done instead of just saying it's not possible and refusing to help. Why did I manage to do more than what she was willing to do?

Service-levels in this country need more of these cases, where customers feedback is actually taken seriously!

E-mailed a complaint to them about her as well, just now. The experience from other Capitec branches have been much better so please don't judge them because of her. There is a branch in Boulders, and across Pretoria (even in the east) now as well.
