Car chargers

Quick question -

I am driving to JHB and back and need a car charger so I can listen to audio books on the iPhone.

I saw some chargers in China Town for under a 100 bucks - will they do the job ?

The Apple ones cost a fortune and I won't use a charger often once I'm back.

First take a look at some reviews on www.dx.com. Apparently some of the 220V USB chargers can damage the iPhone. The 12V devices might be more reliable though.

Check the output on the charger, if it's 5v 1A (Or higher amperage) it should work fine.

I use one of those cheapies with my Galaxy Tab without any issues.

Why go to China town? You can get them on the side of the road. The guy looked honest to me!:erm:

You can get car chargers that come with a lighter connection for the car, and then an extra cable, for around R150.

Check Musica or Look & Listen for these. Some charges get too expense, and all you need is that connection to your car's lighter really. The extra cable can be for backup incase the one that came with your phone gets bust. Which they always do.

Ha! Once my GPS went flat when i was traveling a long distance and i forgot the charger.

Bought one of the chargers on the side of the road and it blew on the spot....last time i buy anything from the side of the road....

I got one from the local Midas that gives me two USB slots. Standard iPhone cable goes into USB on one end, phone connects to other end. Easy. No need for a dedicated charger. About R70 IIRC, and the other slot is permanently powering my Tomtom. I've seen similar things at the Hypermarket auto section.

Got my wife one on Deal Extreme. Works fine. Costed peanuts.

Bouth the SO one at makro - it was only R150 bucks but it works, even charges the iPad which is tougher to charge.

rather buy one from a store than from the guy at the traffic lights, otherwise you lose R100 to a POS and have to shell out another R150, taking the total up to R250...

After spending years fiddling with car chargers, I bought a small 12VDC-to-220VAC inverter that plugs into the lighter socket. Now when driving I charge phone/devices using an AC adapter. Much quicker. No hassles.
