Car purchase...

Everyone talks about golf being so crap come on if you say that then I don't think you really know what your talking about. I bought a chico golf 3 years ago for R26 000 and there was nothing in that price range that could even come close. I drove that car from Midrand to Pretoria everyday for 2 years and I spent about a R1500 in total on service and parts in that time (There easy to service do it yourself).

I still own that car don't drive it anymore but if I sell it now I would still get R26 000 for it. Show me any other car you can do that with.

O and if you can handle that clutch you shouldn't be driving

Well, Amida, no offence, but I know too many people who all say the same thing: "stay away from Golfs"

I personally love VW Golfs, epsecially the newer models but maybe my GF's clutch is just not the same as newer cars, I think its cable or something and no hydraulic or whatever.

And PS: I can drive nicely thanks! (I did enough driving lessons and ya!)

It's not about the car really being that shyt..... it is but that's beside the point.

1. They steel them all at one time or another it will be stolen.
2. If you are in an accident in of those ...... eish
3. They break, and they break alot. Sure it's cheap to fix... but It's rather have a car that is expensive to fix but never breaks :)

Ford KA ?

a friend I know has one and those little cars are pretty good value for money ;)

Or get a "Getz" ?

Dono mate, there is lovely cars but you need to look at the R 50 - 60k range for a desent car tbh :o

If you want to drive around in a mushroom on wheels, then that's your car

Well why do they say stay way from golfs? I've had nothing but good experiences with Golfs.

1. I have a gear lock and alarm fitted never had any problems.
2. I seriously don't think your any worse of then being a corsa or a tazz
3. They don't break a lot tell one thing that keeps on breaking?

O and if you were wondering my insurance is R190 a month including a R4000 sound system.

heh, another one i heard, they call the KA "The streamlined Turtle" ...dont attempt to drive them in nature reserves, you'll attract all the turtles ..:D

As for the whole Golf debate, my pet peeve is this car has not changed shape or even features in like decades? Yet they cost a fortune. I mean i had one of those Citi Golfs 10 years ago, great little car for riding around in town [long roads i have my reservations] and it was like dirt cheap brand new THEN, now the exact same shape and it costs like double..is the changes to those little 1400 engines really that big a deal ?

Anyway, i'd say if you live in a city and generally work and live in that city , i see no problem with a Golf , but if you are in Gauteng and are doing the 500kms a week thing ...i dunno...it's like driving a scooter on the highway tbh....

Doesn't matter, it's incredibly easy to steal a golf because most of them use carburetors, even if you fit whatever alarm car is still easy to steal, the fuel injected models are the same, they aren't like the Corsa one that's tied to a transponder and key, so it's still easy to steal.

But fitting a gear lock and maybe a steering lock should make life very hard for thiefs right?

I plan on doing the following;

1. Saving my ass off for a good deposit
2. Fitting a steering lock as well as gear lock and if I can afford it, a immobilizer.

3. Not getting a sound system, I plan to do what my friend did, get speakers and then connecting them via a amp (under the front seat) via a cable that comes out by the cig/ashtray which connects into a mp3 player (I have a Transcend T.Sonic 650 which I bought via a MyBB user - 2GB, does the job) - not getting a visible CD player etc.

4. Buying a map book! lol! :)

Golfs are k@k... they're a 30 or even nearly 40 year old design.

As for all the security toys you put on the car.. they make NO difference. They're not stealing the car to drive it.. They're stealing the car to sell off the parts, does your alarm protect each and every part in the car?

Yes, the design might be old, but the design works...

What's the saying...

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

... just improve it ;)

I can't help it guys, I think the new VW Golfs are sooooo sexy - if the clutch is good on them (like I expect) then I'm so getting one! I've always wanted one.

They haven't improved the design at all in 30 odd years gdiza, they've made cosmetic tweaks which have made the damn thing look even worse than it used to. But the important design aspects, aka the mechanical bits of the car... are still as they were 30 odd years ago.

Rather spend your money on a car that uses newer design principles and has things like disc brakes, airbags, etc etc..

TB: I hear what you saying, but bru, I'm playing with - what... R55000/R60000 here as all I can afford.

If you know of a car that has all the TECH features and such in that range... YOU TELL ME and I'LL BUY IT!

Till then, I guess it's go with what I can afford!

Dude, do NOT get a citigolf. It is not worth 60k no matter which one you get.

See here for my brief review of owning one for 4 years and 60 000 km.

gdiza for R55- R60k I've just seen a few polos, some corolla's, ford fiestas, peugeot 206's... the list goes on and on...

They're not good cars for cheap...

They're good cars for the real market value.... The citi golf is skewed out of proportion to its real value.
