Hi guys – this one is not for the faint hearted :(

I have a desktop PC.
The keyboard and mouse PS2 ports, on the MB got damaged.
I replaced the keyboard and mouse with USB ones (important clue).

When I start the PC it Blue-screens, at some stage.
When I restart it gives me the option to start in Safe Mode.

Here is the catch – the USB Keyboard is not working yet (drivers not loaded?) and I cannot select anything, which means that I also cannot get into the BIOS to change the boot order, to boot from CD (to run a Repair, for example).

Any bright sparks out there that can point out the obvious? :)

Regards

Dixie

How old is the motherboard? If it is 2 to 3 years old it should have native support for USB Keyboards, which means that you should be able to get into the BIOS. If it is older than that, then you are scroofed!

Post the make and model of the motherboard here if you can.

Sounds like your pc has more than just the keyboard and mouse port busted.

Could be the usb ports are gone as well.

nah ... it should get in with the usb keyboard, even if its not enabled, i've managed it like that. but i see he can't. hmmm what damage did he do the ps2 ports ? did they work loose ? maybe a little fine soldering will help. But if there are broken tracks on the MB, well thats tough. If its an old board, ask around for a replacement. lots of old boards lying round these days!

Thank you for the quick responses, guys :)

have u enabled USB legacy support in the bios ?
I've never been in this one's BIOS, so I don't know if USB legacy support is enabled.

Gary, the PC is older than 3-years :(
F2 gets me nowhere...

Possibly but not probably - was working the previous day and on start-up the next day *blue screen* :o

No idea - if you plug anything into the PS2 Ports, the motherboard screams at you, like there is no RAM and she won't POST.

open the box and Reset the BIOS, either a jumper
or just pull the battery. Machine must be off when you do that
USB support should be (note should) default on.

Depending on the motherboard age, it would scream (errors on the screen/beeps) at you if theres no keyboard plugged in, has it done this? The BSOD sounds like an OS failure (if the computer was indicating hardware malfunction, it would beep at you during the bios load and cause a restart loop - during the first screen where it shows your RAM, and what SATA/IDE devices are connected)

I would say, take the HDD where your OS is installed out, put into another pc that works and troubleshoot from there, and remember your windows setup discs cause a repair might be necessary
