Okay, so maybe this one is a better deal any way (lower shipping and you get some data with it although it is second hand) and is the correct one, right? I assume if it is "HSUPA/HSDPA/WCDMA (2100/900 MHz)", which the spec I found for this model (Huawei E585 MiFi modem ) says it is then it would work on Cell C and Vodacom's network?

This means that if VC's dongles cost R239,26, their bundle to be equivalent to that of Cell C's. If VC's dongle costs more than the R239,26, they are more cost effective than Cell C's bundle. Vice versa for the opposite (the negation of that statement is true as well).

If any expert can give an approximate cost for VC's dongle, we can find the winner

Thanks for doing the math for me. I'm not feeling too awake this afternoon.

For those who don't want the modem, only Cell C has that option (or have I misread?). With Vodacom the deal only exists with the modem right?

For those who don't have dongles, yes. For those that do, or those who want the deal x 2 or more for the same account, I don't think you can get the VC or MTN deal without paying for the dongle, again, even if you don't want it.

So basically the idea is to lure you with the and then "lock" you in because you already have the dongle, then rape you and give you aids with any additional data usage beyond the paltry monthly data allowance.

lol. well if there's a market for the dongles then I suppose you could sell at say R200 a pop. but without any more info on the package (exact cost of data. hmm maybe cpa can help here since providers must state costs of each component which makes up contract?), the deal from VC seems worthwhile albeit for extremely low data usage. now if they can increase that cap, give option of modem or not and permit rollovers, then scale the price linearly with respect to this one, cell c will have a fight on their hands. nothing wrong with dreaming hey?;)
 
I still think although the per Mb price is more expensive, that the cellc deal tops any other deal, as it is 3G data which you can use as you please within a year. You don't have to use 100mb per month, but can use a bit more if required or less without loosing out. If I would still have adsl which is prone to disconnections due to some of our criminally inclined citizens (I have wimax now) I would have bought this the moment it was announced, because it would have helped me during adsl downtime during the year.

Compare apples to apples the comparison really isn't fair. 3GB compared to 1.2GB compared to 900MB and to get another 110mb of data on Vodacom in 1 particular month is R80... Cost per MB 72c

Vodacom is the clear winner if you're only going to use 100MB pm but if there's any chance you'll use more Cell C becomes the better option

Couldn't have said it better.

VC knows that people easily exceed 100MB/mth. Heck, one update alone takes up something like 100MB. With updates coming up every month (sometimes even more often), you won't even have enough for the updates if you just checked your emails on the 100MB per month VC offers i.e. before you start paying through you nose (with MB's going for R2 a pop). It is like a Weekender contract with 120min a month (where have I seen such skullduggery before?).

Cell C is playing it fair. Customers are being hoodwinked by the VC offer.

100MB per month on a 3.6mbps modem is like offering free 30MB/mth on an iPad contract.

it should still be. iirc you sign a contract at your nearest vodashop. keep in mind, this deal caters for pcs and not really cellphones (why else include the dongle?). just make sure that the sim can be used as a prepaid sim if you want it for your daughter's phone (hope what I said makes sense to you).

this deal was VC's attempt to get customers who couldn't really afford the entry level cell c package of R1500. VC really needs to rethink their strategy because now for these market segments:
casual home internet use - cell c R1500 package.
smartphones - cell c 3gb R399 package
dumbphones - R25 for 50mb/R49 100min,mb,sms cell c to mxit whole month. i dont see normal nokia/e250/etc. users prioritising internet use on their phones to the point of actually opting for VC's package (unless of course if their wise parents get it for them;)) .just my take.

point being, cell c ftw in each segment.

EDIT: my bad, just remembered VC'S 2gb + 2gb deal. not so clear cut then. still, with smartphones exploding the money is to be in the lower two segments

Actually MTN Out-of-bundle rate is the same as in bundle and you will be capped after 75MB.

MTN also has a special for R349 including a modem and 75MB Data/month for 12 Months
 
In the table, for comparisons, the Cell-C modem is listed as 7.2, but there is nothing indicating that the Vodacom modem is a 3.6 device - do I detect a Vodacom bias ... ?
 
If I buy the vodacom option the cap will surely be effective without recharge since it is a prepaid option? And then additional data @ R2 per meg?
