Cell C CTO resigns

Jeffrey Hedberg, Chief Executive Officer of Cell C said Obeid had been instrumental in ensuring that Cell C’s network and technology compared with the best in the world.

“He has played a significant role in ensuring that Cell C is able to offer its customers a reliable and quality network.”

i beg to differ. the only thing that is "best in the world" about cellc's network is ability to generate income: since they are using this pseudo "per-second" billing, it means they get to make more money every time u get cut off because u get charged the full cost per minute for every 1st minute or part thereof.

so every time u get disconnected after 10 seconds in2 ur call, ka-ching ka-ching for them. scammers if u ask me!

Cell C recently migrated its core network to a world-class Huawei core switching network. The new core network is fully 3G ready and aligned with 3G standards. Cell C is currently the only network operator in South Africa with a combined 3G/2G network.

Looks like everyones going with Huawei!!
I wonder who owns it, must be making a pretty packet!!
Oh its that guy lol!:p

Huawei presents value for money and with a limited budget like Cell C's it any other company would be hard pressed to beat Huawei. And I hear they get great support.

Hi Supersunbird

I missed that part...will have to ask them about that...

@supersunbird

That also confused me! Lets hope that they will activate their 3G network sooner rather than latter. More competition is what we need.

Maybe this makes more sense?

When will they switch on 3G, if the above is true?

Ah. So that is why he is leaving then...mission accomplished

No ook, what doesn't make sense is that the article says they are the only operator with a 2G/3G network. What are the other operators on then? All our calls on 3G and no gprs anywhere?

I suspect they mean a single vendor, i.e. one set of kit support 2G and 3G.

Vodacom uses different vendors for 2G and 3G, for example.

Pros and cons to both.

Single vendor *should* mean better integration, less complexity, etc. but they've got you by the short and curlies (if their 'next-big-thing' is late, you have to wait, for example).

Multi-vendor can be more challenging to integrate but you have the leverage to follow the best technology path.

Huawei, BTW, is impressing many people at the moment.

I am still waiting for the official reply from Cell C regarding the 2G/3G network. They may have meant something else which got lost between the technical guys and the PR department.

Yeah, probably its what Vodacom3G said. Single source of equipment.

2G/3G

From what I know MTN and Vodacom were 3G capable before Cell-C, using Rel99 and evolving only now to Rel 4 architecture?

Since 2005 Vodacom and MTN have deployed 3G using a single core vendor

The access side may have different vendors, but this article refers to core.
