I have the 21.6Mbps modem...

I was in jhb, and it was working fine. But then I took it on holiday.... I took my same pc down to durban. When I plugged it in durban, same same usb port, it had an enormous struggle detecting the modem! The cell c software kept on saying detecting device, and it simply wouldn't connect....
When I tried it again later, it connected, but then I noticed my keyboard wasn't working! It has FROZEN, I couldn't type any keys! I have logitech G110 gaming keyboard btw. When the keyboard freezes, the modem also gets disconnected, or vice versa.

To get the keyboard working again, I have to unplug it, and re-plug it in again.

I repeated the procedure again, and same story - before the keyboard gets disabled, it's lights flicker on and off, before staying off completely.

I haven't been able to use my Cell C for 5 days now, I am really disappointed with the rubbish usb + software compatibility of these Huawei devices.

This is not the first USB problem I have had with this device.... when a friend plugged his external usb hdd in, it would also not install it, and would say "device not recognized". I had to unplug cell c before it would pick up the modem.

Any ideas??!

What operating system are you using?
Check whether there is a BIOS update for your computer.
Also try updating the software for your USB keyboard.

Have you tried in a different USB port.

I noticed at my place my wireless mouse works fine with the Speedstick, but at a friend's house on the same USB port it disconnects.

The signal at my friend's place was poor, so I think it has something to do with power/signal from the speedstick.

os win7 x86 7600

yes I have latest keyboard drivers.

My cell c was working fine when in jhb, but in durban, same setup same everything just different location, it would not work. And no, if I try putting it in another USB port it simply doesn't work at all.

I have noticed problems with detecting flash drives, when E1820 is plugged in. Even changing ports not helping. After taking out modem, OS detects flash drive.

Have you tried an Ubuntu live CD?

I'm having issues with Vista detecting the E1820 on a 2m USB extension cable - and when plugged directly into the laptop, detects it, but only after a reboot, and only in EDGE mode - whereas Ubuntu, on the other hand, on the same laptop, detects the router just fine, whether it's on a 2m usb extension or plugged in directly, and works with higher speeds.

It would probably work on linux, but there's no point, cause I need windows for work. This is really frustrating me, cause I don't have time to mess around.

It is possible to update the firmware for the stick but must be done with caution.

The sim has to be out.... Point 1
you need correct updated firmware .....2
follow instructions for update......3

warning: doing it wrong will render you stick useless!!!

It is a troubleshooting step, it might help you determine if it's a hardware or software problem.

Have you considered paying a professional?

Which version of Windows?
I said in my previous post, win7 x86 7600

I'm back in jhb, will try again on my mac + win7 as soon as I can access the device which is currently trapped in my boot....

btw what professional?

Your last resort (shouldn't be first?) is like that: Connect modem to the USB 2.0 hub with own power supply. Power supply should be rated at least 2A. It doesn't cost much, around R150. In areas with weak signal your modem adjusts its transmitting power to the maximum. I bet, your computer is not able to supply such power. And solution is simple.

For now you can simulate weak signal by placing your modem in metal can, not completely, let it see 90-95dBm. Then you might see the same problem as on vacation.

are you still having the same problem xera? have you tried any live bootable disk to make sure that the problem is not a usb hardware issue. And does this happen only when you plug in your modem or with any usb device?

Yes it still happens, and no its not a hardware issue I did test... but it seems to be working better now that I'm back - which I really dont understand. In durban it said there was HSPA+ signal, but it just would not work. It would connect, then freeze, then say detecting hardware etc and i was using EXACTLY the same port, settings etc as i use in jhb... now that i'm back in jhb, its working fine again :-| there isn't something on the network that detects our location and does funny stuff is there??!

xera i remember seeing in windows updates there was a update for Logitech download updater not so long ago - maybe that one changed your driver.
I also came across a problem a few days ago where my camera SDcard inserted into the card reader slot wouldn't show files until i removed the E1820 & rebooted also.

I see modem is reseting during connection, plus your past experience with other USB devices on the same computer. Don't speculate :) you know what to do.
