This is good news. Even if all that it does is make Vodacom, MTN, Telkom, Telkom Mobile and Neotel feel threatened, which they really should.
Late starters always get to leapfrog the early adopters in terms of rolling out the latest technology, and not having to worry about migration paths, backwards compatibility, and upgrading their networks.
Maybe Cell C made the right choice to stay out of the 3G/WCDMA game initially? Time will tell...

No phones in SA support HS+ as far as i know, thats why no other networks have moved to HS+ even though its been commercially available for more than a year now.
Also, most vendors have tendered for the rollout. As far as i know there are no definate details other than that Cell C will be running with 2+ vendors.

hspa tech is now mature and close to reaching its max standard. Also, newer equip is more energy etc efficient so they get to take the best stuff and bolt it on. Only issue i see is the usual one cell companies have.. i.e. link upgrades

Good news... never gonna use it but SA is so backwards we need more money spent on IT infrastructure

Cell-C has 2100mhz Spectrum
Cell-C has already been allocated 2100mhz spectrum which they have and own.
They will use this spectrum just like MTN - VodaCom - Telkom-Mobile
Your modems and phones will work with cell-c sim cards.
LTE 2600mhz spectrum has not been allocated yet, so no one may use it except Iburst & Sentech.

Surely HSPA+ is backwards compatible with HSDPA + HSUPA and/or maybe 3G? Or do they have to be rolled out seperately? It would be stupid if the chipsets that they use in the base stations don't backwardsly support 3G/HSDPA+HSUPA, as well as HSPA+. Is this possible though?
Would be interesting to know how it works from a technical/technological perspective...
Probably Huawei, the chinese are everywhere.
Why don't they upgrade their coverage and stop piggy backing on VC.
Cell C are game changers!
I gotta hand it to Cell C for having the big brass cajones to do what none of the other, more cash-flush operators have done and that is allow free on-network calls based on airtime purchases which you make.
Considering this is a common practice in international markets and the Cell C CEO is experienced in those markets, it's good to see some international trends being implemented here. The usual SA CEO's and SA led companies seem to be so immersed in their rear-end-price-gouging that they still have not got around to providing a good value, affordable broadband service despite the market crying out for it.
If Cell C can come out with a flat-rate, data unlimited, 512K HSDPA connection for a moderate, reasonable R400/month or so, they'll be getting my support.
Why are all the networks STILL charging R2/MB for data when the telecoms market has changed RADICALLY since these prices were implemented about 4/5 years ago? Seems like collusion and I hope Cell C can be a significant mobile broadband market disruptor, leading the way with affordable, good-value, fairly prices services aimed at the mass-market.

Where are they going to get the R5 billion from? Thought they were already in hectic debt?
If they have decent speeds, reliability, coverage and are cheaper than the rest I will move over to them. It is going to be a big challenge though!

If i understand correctly, its more an upgrade to HSDPA and HSUPA? If that's the case, the other operators might already be busy implementing it slowly. Seeing they (Vodacom who's on 7.2mb), apparently ditched Seacom and are going for their own. This could already be an indication that they have big plans. If it's true or not, I don't know. Lets hope so, and hope that Cell C gets their network sorted.. Competition is healthy after all.

cell c has been a misnomer in the broadband market so let's hope this will throw them right in the deep end. what they will need from a managerial point of view is a decent set of strategists for the roll out. historically their management structure has been pretty pathetic.
