Cell C Speed Test Results

Interesting. What antenna did u get?

Hi, This antenna http://www.poyntingdirect.co.za/pK-...or-cellular-data-cards-include-7-m-cable.aspx
with this coupler http://www.poyntingdirect.co.za/pADPT-026/Adapter-cable-for-all-USB-Modems---SMAf.aspx
Is a thread on why here
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/276198-Cell-C-E1820-External-Antenna-Connector

I originally had the thing pointing at a wrong tower but once i got it right it improved my signal by 20 dBm -

Changed the direction which my usb was facing (to the wall) to facing (away from wall) and my dBm jumped from -69 to -57 and my dl speed improved aswell. Check this thread for my previous results.

New results:

Dl : 5.05 Mbps
Ul : 2.81 Mbps

5 or so years ago we all would've given everything to have such speeds...

Downloads and uploads all are excellent.

What methods did you guys used to test and draw up this table?

Not bad at all me think?

Hi Ginggs, - Any chance you looked to see if there is any RSSI differance between the 2 with no antenna connected?
Is the above with or without antenna connected? If without i guess there will be no or little differance looking at the results.

My username does end in an 's', but there is only one of me. :)

I borrowed an E1752 with 2GB SIM card, then ran speedtest.net tests to Johannesburg and London servers, did the same with my E1820 and 5GB SIM, then swapped SIMs, then swapped modems.

I didn't write them down, but IIRC they were very similar.
Is the above with or without antenna connected?
In both cases I was using an external antenna and a Poynting inductive coupler.

I'm getting some strange results, not sure what's wrong with my connection but I can't get above 1.5Mbs down, trying it in the Sandton area. In one speedtest I was actually getting a substantially better upload than download. RSSI is -79dBm. I have an E1820 with 5GB package. Any advice?

Really nice comparison :)

It seems the only real difference in speed is between the E1820 and E1752 on local traffic.

Just for interest sake, why does nobody do the speed/ping test to an overseas server, eg London. I looked at the schedule and with Latency of 600ms+ to London, if that is true, it would be almost impossible to play online with PS3 in games like Fifa 11. Am i wrong, please advise me as i was thinking of getting the Cell C deal but especially for Fifa 11???

Dude, I've been playing FIFA on XBOX Live the last two weeks via my 5GB dongle. Running very nicely indeed, almost no lag...not sure how it will perform on PS3 but it shouldn't be that much different. :)

location: pinetown, durban

i've never got download speeds over 2mbps before. now i'm getting almost 8. the whoosh has finally arrived!(-: anyone else been getting better speeds in pinetown over the last few days?

I am getting good speed tonight. usually its edge speed, however tonight I have 3G speeds, http://www.speedtest.net/result/1069233477.png at -101dBm. Mdma wont tell me which tower its drawing the signal from. I don't mind though, so long as its an ok connection I am happy, not sure how long its going to last either.

I don't think those London speedtest.net results are a true reflection of Cell-C's international bandwidth though.
Last night I was downloading at 650KB/s (about 5.3Mbps) from apple.com, although that may have been cached.

You should only conduct a speed test when nothing else on your computer is using your internet connection, so yes, your series downloading will affect your result...
