CellC 4G / LTE

Get home router Huawei B315s R999 from Edgars/CNA/Jet in the Telkom section. It supports all SA LTE networks

Thanks, seems interesting.

Think I might also get a cheap prepaid sim and use my old phone as the LTE modem and test signal...

Get a nice wifi router with usb port (like the WNDR 3800) and connect a USB modem. Biggest advantage: upgrade the USB modem cheaply off ebay every few years. I've upgraded my USB modem now 3 times already, and will probably again do it next year after LTE-A is rolled out. Which ever router you buy, just make sure its compatible with the ROOter custom openwrt firmware. (see my earlier posts in this thread)

Hi Johnatan

We need your exact location, we'd like to confirm with Network for LTE coverage.

Hi, around Civic Center > Adderly > CPUT area.
I'm busy walking out to get the SIM now and will call when I get home this evening, hope it all goes quick :)

Was in Sandton so just out of interest had a look at the CNA and they had the router so bought it :D

Very impressed so far, on my old router I was getting maybe 4/5Mb speeds on a 21Mb stick. The new router I get 12Mb. Just need to find out if I can swap the Giga200 sim to a LTE sim now!

Ok, so upgraded 3G SIM to LTE SIM...

I get 1 bar connection on the router in LTE
On 3G I get full bars...

I assume there's nothing that can be done other than to buy external antennas?

What is your speed like?

Sometimes it was better to be on 3G/HSPA with poor signal than 2G with full signal.
The same might apply to LTE.

That bad on LTE that speedtest.net doesn't even want to run...
On 3G I get +6Mb download.

I might try move the modem around the house to see if there's better signal somewhere else

Using Cell C LTE for 3 months. Absolutely no issues. Previously on Vodacom contract. Constant data billing problems, SMS stats not working, or displaying wrong data, in result hitting OOB, depleting daytime data instead of NightOWL, etc... With Cell C Giga200 package just relax and enjoy.

Tried all the different rooms and seems like there is signal on one side of the house. I can get the full 3 bars on the router but speed wise I was only hitting between 5-10Mb on LTE....not amazing...

I'll just leave it on CellC 3G for now and maybe investigate Telkoms LTE coverage.

I get 15mbps on LTE but 20mbps on HSPA+. Guess which one I'm using...

I can only hope that things improve as cell C expands their LTE network. I'm not in the official reception area.

BTW. I heard somewhere that LTE requires two correctly spaced & aligned antennae for speeds > 30 or 40 mbps. I got 33mbps max on telkom LTE with great signal with a USB LTE modem with internal antennae only.

I'm also interested in ping though. Might try it out on the weekend to see if the ping is better on LTE at slower speeds compared to 3G at higher speeds... So much effort though...

Or could just go Telkom and and pray for better signal. I'd be really happy with >20Mb!

I can't remember exactly but I think ping was only marginally better on LTE... (something like 18 vs 20ms to a JHB speedtest.net server).

Pinging on LTE is stable while I have never seen stable pings on 3G. No matter which network, sometimes it jumps by a factor 10x-20x.

I'm curious to see what speeds CellC LTE guys are getting, over at Telkom LTE things appear to be going quite well...

Cell C is 20% faster than Vodacom LTE in my area. I get both signals from the same shared tower which has fiber optic backbone. I didn't test Telkom recently.

I was thinking of getting the LTE modem from Cell C with 100gb of data, so I decided to test their LTE Sim card first and got these speeds

Is it just me or their network is this poor?

It depends on location... At my place I get very good speeds on 3G:

Get a Telkom SIM card and test it at your place, before you commit to a ISP.
