Change Domain Registrants Email

Hello,

since weeks I am now trying to change the registrants Email address in the WHOIS record of my clients domain.

Why Telkom put the hostmaster Email address in the Registrants Email field in the first place is strange enough.

I sent an Email to [email protected] and asked what the process is to get the change done.

The response was:

"Good day
Thank you for emailing Telkom Internet Hostmaster .
That is not possible. That is to show which company is hosting your Domain.
Regards
Telkom Internet Hostmaster
Email: [email protected]
Tel: 10210"

This statement would be funny if I wouldn't be so annoyed already.

How can you Telkom, let people respond to emails who obviously don't have the slightest clue what they are
talking about?

Anyone here who has done the change before and can help?
 
I’m presuming this is for a .co.za domain.

Is the domain on the old Legacy system or on the new EPP system?

If on the new EPP system, they are in breach of their Registrar agreement if they use their email address as the registrants.

If you are not sure, PM me the domain and I will check this out for you
 
WebAfrica is still doing this too! It's a blatant violation of the registrar agreement.

yes it is a .co.za domain which was registered in 2009.

Dont know if it is on the new EPP system.

I asked the legal team at Uniforum about that. I asked if that was allowed and they seemed to indicate it was fine. As long as they could contact the person if need be.

Uniforum no longer exists. ZA Registry is the new central registry entity and if you go through their terms and conditions and registrar agreement it definitely violates both of them. It's a major problem because:

1) Unscrupulous ISP's put their own email address as the registrant's email address to prevent the legitimate owner of the domain from being able to approve or deny transfer requests, thereby effectively hijacking the domain.

2) Members of the public cannot contact the legitimate owner of the domain directly because the whois record does not reflect the email address of the owner.

These are both serious problems.

So legal at ZACR says it was ok?

Please note that in terms of our Published Polices and the Registrar Accreditation Agreement, the registrar must properly identify
the registrant. That being said, it is possible for a registrar to have a Privacy Policy whereby he absorbs the risk, on behalf of his
client. However, in that scenario, the registrant details must be made available to the Registry, on request.

Paragraph 5.3.5.2:

5.3.1 When registering a new domain name the registrar will supply the following data to the registry system:

5.3.5.1 The registrant, being the legitimate beneficiary of the domain name service, is accurately identified on the domain name record (full legal name); and
5.3.5.2 The registrant’s designated email address is accurately identified on the domain name record where prescribed.

The email they sent you is irrelevant. That email is just someone's opinion. The published procedures are fact.

Its a response from their legal guys. If you have a problem, take it up with them. Report Telkom for this. See how far you get.
 
Not quite irrelevant if it came from ZACR legal and signature was ZACR legal. This would say that their legal team is giving out information which is against its own policies.

And Calvin and a lot of top management were cc`d in on in the reply. The reply was not just sent to me.

Correct, the registrant details are supposed to be used in the name & email fields to protect the registrant. ICANN has almost same policies in the new 2013 RAA agreement, it's all about registrant rights and responsibilities.
