just did some pings and most came in at about 1000ms
which is about double....

hrmmm

since I am fairly clueless with this kinda stuff... what does it mean when you have high pings... Does it mean that it takes a while for Sentech connection to register stuff... ie crap latency but good throughput (assuming these speeds stay the same)

regardtv, I dont give a **** about ping times, and seeing as Im not seeing an improvement, I'd just like to add that if they did cut over to their satelites for bandwidth, good for them... now you'd think they'd service their HIGHER PAYING FREAKING CUSTOMERS FIRST FOR GOD SAKES!

Hell, my gran on a scooter with a memory stick is faster than Sentech's MyWireless!

I have to admit speeds this morning are more than double what they have been lately. I use TCP/IQ to test, and results now are 101, 100, and 97 Kbits/sec. I haven't seen such speeds since that dark day in May.

Well done Sentech!

At last we are back to the bandwidth performance that I last saw in March when I started using the service.

I have a basic package (128k, am well out of the map zone - but have a 28dbi antenna on a 25 meter tower pointing to the back of tower 50 Hurleyvale giving me around 40% signal) and bandwidth this morning both local and international is a solid 12.4KB/s.

Lets hope that it stays this way

I have a 256 package on Mintek and no speed improvement has been seen. In fact, after Wednesday's changes speeds dropped to 2,5kB/s and signal was 1%. It is now ~8% and int'l speed is back to the usual 6kB/s. This mornings tests at 09:15 show: Rodent local 14.38KB/s; Sentech(local?)11.52KB/s and Stanford int'l 4.28kB/s.

Dont be too excited yet ppl. If Sentech is only testin this with 128K ppl, it may be likely that extra bandwidth is available from the other pools of the other packages. What I'm saying is that, whilst contention has been switched back on with a decent result, the true impact of contending will only be felt when all package users are working that way. I am aware that each package has its own bandwidth pool, but you never know with Sentech [:p]

Secondly it seems that Sentech has brought onstream more satellite capacity - this would explain such high latency on intl circuits. This is a good move if they have done so, but what they must do now is seperate traffic when determining the intl route. In other words non latency dependant intl traffic - FTP, HTTP browsing, P2P - should be diverted onto sat, and the latency dependant stuff - UDP (gaming, stock trading) and CITRIX/terminal services - must go over SAT3 links.
If Sentech can sort that out, they will have happy customers...

My cap is gone. But I dont want to remove my signature just yet. Lets give it a week. It is looking a lot better though. Positive steps in the right direction.. I wonder why this is happening.. *cough*

well my speeds are still the same this morning and I can only hope Sentech keep this good work up.

Lets face it... most of us moaned like b1tches to Sentech and their are signs of improvemnt. They have to... it ensures their survival and credibility.

Well done Sentech... keep up the persistence and you WILL have a bunch of loyal customers.

Greedy, it's obvious: the 4600 word post on myADSL by LoneGunman prompted Sentech into action. [:D]

Hmm ... just did some speed tests, and now I'm not so sure anymore. While my bandwidth graph does regularly reach 16 kB/s, it goes up and down the whole time, and a "wget --cache=off" on two different files from US sites both show an *average* throughput of 5.42 kB/s each. Will try now again with the two files going at the same time.

well I spoke to support today to cancel my long standing ticket number because I am convinved they are making steps to improvement...

Anyway I asked him about other packages 256 & 512 and he says those should be kicking in soon...
Also asked him if he knew what the changes were and the lasting effect. He did mention the bandwidth profile software and also mentioned that speeds will improve and that these speeds is just the beggening.

I think Ditch hit the nail on the head with regards to why the improvement but one cannot deny the CUG meeting had a small part and also the thousands of calls they have been recieving from members...

I certainly hope these speeds are a sign of the future for myWireless

Thanks vowthorn, but seems that post you're referring to was just deleted (and gone too the context of my follow-up), unless I just accidentally edited out my own post or something. I guess that childish repetitive flames about the length of LG's posts are acceptable on this forum, but posts pointing out the obvious truth, and asking that people stop posting these boring flames, are not. I'm trying to keep on-topic here about the speed issue. I'll just re-iterate my viewpoint without the humour portion this time: I believe that THE primary reasons we've seen improvements are (a) bad press about the service causing Sentech to lose customers and lose potential new customers and (b) imminent and immediate prospect of competition from Vodacom and iBurst by January. The meeting probably played a small part too, just like negative posts on this forum probably played a small part too, but I think both of these pale in comparison to (a) and (b).

Back to the speed topic: downloading two (international, uncached) files at once seems to give me a total average throughput of around 8 kB/s.

Well, Sentech must have found the leak and plugged it. After this morning's burst up to 100 kbps, right now I am back below 50 (as measured by TCP/IQ), where I have been for sooo loooong.

Last night was quite impressive. No disconnection and 380MB in less than 12 hours. Averages for a 4 hour period was around 12KB/s.

While on the topic of speeds. Just swopped the modem to the Win2K pc to check signal etc. Signal strength has gone up to the former strength of 16% Hasn't been there in at least 3 weeks.

MyADSL Local (South African) Speed Test
Your current bandwidth reading is:
35.50kbps
which means you can download at 4.44 KB/sec. from our servers

Telkom ADSL speed test
Http: Your line speed is approximately 121.8 Kbps or 14.9 kBytes/sec
Ftp: single thread is pretty much the same

Rodent test
Your current bandwidth reading is: 107.10kbps
or second time around
Your current bandwidth reading is: 130.60kbps

Better than last time where I got less than 56kbps

Rodent: Any conclusions from your database that you keep from you website?

52.48 Kbps
(6.56 KBps)

76.88 Kbps
(9.61 KBps)

42 Kbps
(5.25 KBps)

Tower 60 (woodmead) myWireless 128Kb

Yup lotsa of bursting n spikes n stuff. Tried a torrent today and that is simply cruising...

When I downloaded FireFox1.0PR today that also came in at 11-12Kb (suspected it was cached) but this was happeing while on a torrent... so erhm... yeah... what to download ...

I told you Noone... have you tried the valuable advice that I recieved so much to simply move your modem about... :p
