Cheap Graphics Card

GOOD Advice.

What about waiting for HD 4650/4670, 4650 comes out (USA assume) tomorrow AFAIK?

Personally I would not buy anything in the mid-low range until seeing what those do, and their pricing.

not a bad idea, but they will cost in the region of about R1200 and up...

thing is, Nvidia pretty much only have the 9600gt that is a budget beast, and it's still priced higher then the HD3800 series...
And It's to my understanding that ATI are working hard to seriously improve there drivers, so,

if ATI improve their opengl drivers then I will look seriously at getting a card. Until then....

8600 gt for R700 is your best bet, the 8500 isn't half bad either, i have both cards running in two machines and they cope with everything at good playable FPS.

Guys i have R1200 to spend on a new gfx card[my flatscreen murdered my finances]
I have a gecube 1600pro card.Would any of the new cards be a massive improvement?
Nobody at the pc shops have answered my question accurately.

lol, I have the same card :D(ddr 3 version + heavy overclock)
but, now that the hd4670 is released, look @ that... It's will make you wet your pants when you see the difference.

Now, the reason why i advise this card over the HD3850 (256mb) is that the HD4670 is a much better card with AA on, It will play most games on high and consumes MUCH less power(59 watts tops!!!!) so you have no need to upgrade any psu...

they will be right in your price point :D. best of all, it that they actually faster then the hd3850 (in between the hd3850 and hd3870)

i reckon they will overclock well too...

it supports dx10.1, etc, so it has that over the Nvidia's

@oronte and demon angel, see this thread, http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=134920, on HD 4670.

Don't know how it performs next to x1600pro, but we hope it will be about ZAR800-1000, I would check those out and if they perform according to your needs wait for them to arrive here if they suffice.

This card I think is for me personally as well, I was going to put a system together with HD3650/70 a month or two back, glad I waited to see these.

as previous nvidia fanboi deluxe0rz, i can say that card is well worth the price. i bought my 3650 for a grand about 4-6 months ago and it is a very good card. the 3850 is simply amazing (friend has it). bang per buck is better than a charitable debbie ;)

Dunno how it compares but you can have my 8800GTS 320MB for that price

Just get the 3850 if you can get it for that price.

From take2:

MSI nVidia GeForce 8600GTS - 256MB - PCI-E Price: R 1,062

XFX nVidia GeForce 9600GSO - 384MB - PCI-E Price: R 1,331

Zotac nVidia GeForce 9600GT - 512MB - PCI-E Price: R 1,404

TwinTech nVidia GeForce 9600GT - 512MB - PCI-E Price: R 1,404

Obviously I'd say take one of the 9600gts.

i reckon you should wait a week or so for the HD4670 to land here in SA,
The HD4670 is really a great card racking up mainly 90%+ from reviews,
Seems like AMD has a winner here :D

Oh, i ask this because i could not load the catalyst drivers on my 1600pro![on vista ultimate]
Downloaded 4 different drivers at almost 100 mbs a pop on my little 2gig data bundle.
Eina!

Yeah, that 4670 is the first gfx card I've seriously considered buying in years.

Now all I need is a PC game I actually want to play ;)

I need some urgent help. I've increased my budget a bit and I want one of these two cards, but I'm not sure which is better:
http://www.kalahari.net/electronics/Twintech-NVIDIA-GeForce-8600-GT-1GB/4656/33168300.aspx
or
http://www.take2.co.za/electronics-leadtek-nvidia-geforce-9500gt-512mb-pci-e-4021070.html

The 9500 has lower power consumption (I have a 350W supply presently and would prefer using less energy anyway) and newer features, but I've also read that the 8600 may still be better than the 9500, and this one has 1gb (not sure if that really makes it better or not), also take2 have the same Leadtek card with ddr2 ram instead at R130 less: http://www.take2.co.za/electronics-leadtek-nvidia-geforce-9500gt-512mb-pci-e-4021069.html
Does the DDR make any real difference in performance.
I'm ruling out the ATI cards because they all suck with 64-bit Linux (which I mostly use) and the newer ones that have good drivers are way out of my price range (so are the ones I've chosen but I'm splurging when I really shouldn't).

Here are the manufacturer specs for them
Leadtek 9500 DDR3

Leadtek 9500 DDR2

Twintech
http://www.twintech3d.com/products_features.asp?num=221

The card will mainly be used for gaming, I mainly play RPGS (Neverwinter, Oblivion) and Strategy Games (Civ, Empire Earth, Spore etc)
Please someone help!

I'd go for ATi but hey///

Er, I think 8600GT > 9500GT. Someone care to back me up?
Readlly oronte I'd go for the HD3650 or the newer HD4650's
