Our Canon ip72400 good points: non genuine cartridges are cheap, fast printing.
Bad points: cartriges but do not last long, colours are inconsistent, takes ages to wake up and start printing and lastly it says it needs repair (again).

What is an economical replacement?

We print less than 1 page a day.
Colour would be nice but not essential.
I do not mind spending a bit more for a printer that is reliable and cheap to run.
I do not want a printer from Macro that costs more for cartridges than it is to buy.
Thanks

If colour not essential get a laserjet?

Get the Epson L3250 Ecotank

I would not get a laserjet. When I bought my HP Colour laserjet it was R400 per toner (x4). Yip needs 4.

Now HP Charges R2000 a toner x4 to print 1400 pages.

Sold it and went for the Epson L3150 Ecotank (the L3250 is the newer model). Prints via Wifi (bit tricky to setup but works well when it does), and just print like no tomorrow).

Its about R2999 but you get one without the scanner for R1999 if really want to go that way. I havent looked back. Works well and easy. Can print a heckuva lot, and the ink is cheap.

Highly recommended. Using this machine since Sept 2018 and it's been flawless. Can pickup 3 x generic toners for around R350.

My 2c.... Just budget (say R1000) to replace once a year (max) and get a printer with the best rating from a place like Takealot. With economical you start looking at ink tank printers which is an overkill for your requirements

If you dont need colour just get an older HP Laserjet, sure can take long. My favourite HP Laserjet Ever made for the HP 4000N. Its not wireless or anything but its a noisy but working so well workhorse. Everyone that I ever met that had one, still has one. Toner is between R600-R1400 for original and prints about 10 000 pages in black and white.

One of the Brother ink tank printers should be good.

Trouble is those old printers are so big and unless you've got an office they take up a huge amount of space.

My 5c to add - Judge a printer purchase on the cost of running the printer if you plan to print more than a few pages every now and again and especially if you plan to print in volume or full page colour photos. Also, with load shedding ensure the printer is not cycled too often especially inkjet printers because most consume a tiny bit of ink each time they're powered on.

Thank you. May I ask why you would need 3 toners and not just 1?

Looks like the Canon MF237W is no longer available. Its replacement (I think) MF275DW is over R4000.

I see the Epson ecotank L1250 for R1999. Can anyone report on it in use?

anything ink tank

ink is cheaper per page in general and now days canon ink tanks print really well even in comparison to laser

Laser is superior but you going to pay that cost per page overall wise nothing Laser is cheap unless you Printing dozens of pages per day best rent those from nashua or something.
