Cheaper Internet access is coming soon

I want to make an appeal to you guys not to post your negativity anymore, but rather to use your posts to demand change. I am fearful that all of the IBIWISI posts and "This is South Africa" and "it will never happen" are all going to hijack our lower prices!

The operators will turn around and use your negativity to justify their pricing structures.

Instead of posting "things will never change"... from now on I want you to post "we demand change".

Instead of posting "prices will not come down" ... post "We demand that prices come down"

There is no more excuse for poor service or inflated prices. If being negative makes you satisfied, then you deserve the high prices.

I for one am sick of them and I demand lower prices. Seacom is in a position to give that to us... no more excuses!!!

If you agree, then please quote this entire post!

Optimism at last.

Every ISP would want the first move, because that will give them a big advantage.

I agree. We should be positive about this. Being negative, creates an environment where the telecoms companies can actually get away with not filtering savings through because the market is not expecting it anyway. :)

Sounds funny but it could well be. We should all just demand slashed pricing when SEACOM is activated. Simple.

GIVE IT TO ME BABY!!!! AH HUH!!! AH HUH!!!!!

:D

Even though my experience with Openweb as an ISP was less than satisfactory, I got to chat to Keoma quite a bit. He is an awesome person and I know he is on the ball when it comes to stuff like this.

We had the CEO of SEACOM on 5FM the other morning talking about how it's going to be open to all service providers (including cellular) so let us hope there is no price collusion going on. Cheap 3G and ADSL all round I say!

It looks like cheaper internet is in the works for SA, in the future.

I for one am glad to hear this.

This is a grand thread.

I also think SEACOM will deliver. I am positive about this. I sent an edited e-mail to Amobia. I will post response.

lolno

Edited letter sent to SAINET.

Haha, then they've got another one from me. Should be almost identical. :p

I don't have that much hope for Sainet though, they've been very static until their latest reshuffling which just pushed all of their prices up from being the best to less than average. :( And they don't even have local cap.

But whoever actually gets to some better prices first is my new ISP. :D

This is a great feel good thread. Just reading the response from Open Web put butterflies in my stomach. Looks like we will finally be getting the price and bandwith we deserve :D

Here is the reply from WebAfrica...

Hi Gary

Here are the answers to the questions you have provided:

1) How have you as an ISP prepared for Seacom? What preparations or
inquiries have you made to date?
- We are completely aware of the Seacom cable landing. As for preparations and inquiries, our engineering department has this completely under control.

2) When do you anticipate connecting to Seacom? or through to Seacom using top tier providers?
- We have built our own network and this will be going live within the next 2 weeks, this will put us on the same tier as IS and SAIX as we will have our own pipe. So we will no longer be resellers of SAIX. We will be connecting to the Seacom cable as soon as possible.

3) What pricing models and products are you looking at or proposing for the
next few months?
- It is too soon to say, we are busy doing market research. Our prices will be just as competitive if not more than they are now.

4) How are you educating your customers about the coming benefits of
Internet Access through the Seacom cable?
- We will be including information in our WA newsletter.

5) What logistical problems do you foresee in connecting to Seacom and
providing access through to Seacom?
- None at all. We are as ready as we can be.

1) I expect that prices will decrease in the next three months.
- Before the end of the year is a better time frame to work with, as something like this takes time to make sure the transition is seamless.

2) I expect that my internet cap will increase in the next three months.
- It will not increase automatically, this will need to be done from your side.

3) I expect that latency and bandwidth throughput will be improved in the
next three months.
- As I mentioned in your 1st question regarding the time frame, but yes latency and bandwidth throughput will definitely be improved.

Whoo hoo!!!!
WebAfrica has their own connection to Seacom!!!!!!
I am soooooo happy!

Well that sounds quite doubtful. End of the year they say, then they say,
you'll have to increase your own cap.

They're downplaying this. A 30% reduction in internet costs is a joke, if anything the price should be brought down by 80% at least.

I also don't like what Web Africa are saying. If they have their own infrastructure to connect directly to Seacom they should easily be able to up caps by more than double. And not basically be saying that by the end of the year prices should go down but caps will be staying the same??

Well that depends on how much of your internet costs are for international bandwidth, the only thing Seacom should really be affecting. If you have R200 line rental and your R200 cap for example, then 30% in total is about as much as you can expect to save. I think this is what the guy on 5FM was trying to say for normal users at the moment.

Some other estimates might have been for bandwidth costs alone at around 80%. For most of us who use a lot of international bandwidth it should be far more than 30%.

Gary i am a big webafrica supporter but come on, none of that makes sense, they will have their own pipe but do not know what customers want and need market research? Sounds to me like a crock of shyte they spewing.

Market research? Are you joking, are they not ISP surely they know what their market needs without doing research.

Surely they know uncapped adsl for 400 bucks would go down a treat? Dude i fear we all pinning our hopes on this seacom thing and just like the cell operators we will be screwed, in any other country 4 cell operators means lower pricing, in this country they just fix the pricing as they will do with seacom. We are all going to be very disappointed i fear.

Yea, but I kicked against all those and demanded that they keep me on the plain 2GB Hard Capped account. Dunno how much they are charging me for that though. I never checked the bank statement :o

But I am with you. First ISP to have a more than 33% drop in effective prices... I'm with them within a month - no questions asked - me and a bunch of my friends.

I also sent my edited letter to some people within MTN/VC/CellC ... still looking for some random ISPs to email. I wonder what MyISP will do with the whole seacom thing?

I really hope WA is behind. Openweb's response was much more positive. They said they'll have new products even before SEACOM, I hope they're gonna start the race.

I'm hoping/thinking what they mean is that they will keep their current product offerings and caps (but at a lower price) while introducing newer larger cap bundles at the top of their product offering.

The user can then choose to leave his subscription as is (and pay less), or move up to a bigger cap (and pay about the same).

Anyways... I'm optimistic. If they want to drag their heels on their offerings then they can expect to be left in the dust. This is no time for vacillation. It is time for decisive action!
