There are a few worrying things in both OW and WA's replies:

The whole WA letter stinks to high heaven for me, not a reply I would have welcomed. Immediate action is what we demand!
I understand that they need to recover costs for their infrastructure they put in place, but end of the year?????? Six months AFTER Seacom goes live???????

UNACCEPTABLE WEBAFRICA!

By now most companies should have received the final pricing structure from Seacom and the smart people should have already made a few calculations to estimate cost, yet it seems that the two ISP's so far had been tight lipped on delivering real promise of improvement.

Is there a body behind the scenes that are trying to fix the pricing again?

I smell a lawsuit coming, someone get us some dirt on who is trying to repress progress so that we can take active steps against them.
 
The body that approves the "fixed" prices is called ICASA !!!
 
Great thread Gary, The first ISP to take the leap and lower their prices will receive SO many new customers. They should be rubbing their hands with excitement. A new market will soon emerge:)

I need a volunteer, who has an account with Telkom to PM so I can give them some e-mail addresses to send the letter to. I'm not going to post the e-mail addresses publicly as they are private work addresses. But if you are willing and have an account with TelkomSA, then please send me a PM.

What! Surely they have enough customers already to have a feeling of what we need. 30G packages are a big part of their turnover surely in regards to the 1G local packages.

- Before the end of the year is a better time frame to work with, as something like this takes time to make sure the transition is seamless.

I'm from WA from the beginnig, only because Openweb didn't have credit card facilities, I will move just like that if I'm not happy by the end of June/July. :)

They do have credit card facilities now. They are using a third party payment gateway. You add credit to your account and can then assign that credit where ever you want on your account panel. If it is for uncapped, then you have to send an e-mail to Keoma.

Then there will be nothing to stop me from going over to Openweb. :)

But I'm happy with WA for now, only the next 3 months will tell who budge first! :D
 
Next three months? How about knocking of a month and making it the next two months?

I predict that there will be chaos in the ISP arena the end on June/July with people jumping ship and new registrations flooding in to other ISPs that were not near sighted.

Interesting month were going to have!

You guys need to relax about WebAfrica... they have been and are one of the most competitive ISPs in South Africa. I highly doubt that they are going to jeopardise that position. I am confident that they will be on the ball with products and pricing... they always have been.
 
SEACOM would offer wholesale internet bandwidth - several times the current availability - to companies such as Neotel, Telkom, MTN and Vodacom.

Because some clients eg. got a 1GB account because they only need 1GB. Why give them 2GB for the same price when they won't even use it? Rather let the client decide what they want I say. Some people I know got a 30GB account and they will all go :rolleyes: if they suddenly get a 50GB account for the same price because most of them cannot even finish up a 30GB account in a month due to telscum and their slow 384k lines. Leave the power in the client's hands I say.

Well in all honesty i don't care about the speeds to be honest i think 4 meg lines are more than fine for most home users, it is the cost of bandwidth that gets me.

seriously most home users do not need 46 meg lines, just give us cheap bandwidth already dammit.

Well, when you can legally rent a HD movie online, a measly 4mb line will not help much.

We in SA are still stuck with the "turn off images to save bandwidth" curse called Telkom (hereafter referred to as telscum).

We live in a day and age when using 100s of gigabytes a month is not abusive, but normal. Not here in SA, but overseas. Rent a movie online in HD = 20GB. Who cares? With a fast enough uncapped connection 20GB is nothing.

Here in SA? 20GB???? OMG that is two years worth of bandwidth!!!

Get real SA, we are behind. Very, very far behind.

Time to start demanding uncapped 4mbps lines for a decent price. Only then will we really see what the internet is all about.
 
I've sent off my emails and now I'm waiting for replies. Will post here as soon as I receive them.
