Cheapest per-GB ADSL data bundles

The price of bandwidth changes depending on what your connection speed is, i.e.: the price for 3GB of data on a 384kb/s connection is less than 3GB of data on a 4mb/s connection.

Silly, i know

Lol, yeah. I followed up to that point. I want to know what reason they could possibly have for doing it?

I'm not sure if you realise, but that is how bandwidth is really sold. In fact to charge the same for an amount of data on any line speed is quite a backwards concept for "broadband". The norm in countries with real broadband is to be uncapped and charge higher amounts for faster speeds.

Cybersmart have their own network unlike most ISP's that are simply reselling SAIX/IS bundles (probably the worst model you could have for ADSL I think), so to them it matters on which speed the data is used. Or that is how I understand it, obviously the data amount still plays a large part in SA.

And yet there's still no 1GB international cap that competes with 3G on speed or total price, why do ISPs even bother having those?

Surely a 3GB cap is a 3GB cap - whether it is used in 1 day or 30 days.

+1 I could understand that pricing structure here if we were uncapped. But for capped accounts this doesnt make sense. And any "bandwith" should roll over indefinately as well.

maybe it will start changing with all these uncapped accounts coming around now. will wait and see.

cybersmart isnt that bad, i have been using for for quite some time now and also been making use of afrihosts 5gb package.

I was going to cancel cybersmarts 384k all in 1 bundle and move to Telkom DO3 but then cybersmart gave me their 384k uncapped account with line rental for R519 which i find isnt too bad

If I have a 4mbps line and use 3GB in one day ins't that better then for the isp because I have to buy more?

I don't know about the other ISP's but when I was investigating Screamer I know that they charge R0.23 per Gig capped irrespective of your line speed.

I eventually settled for their 512K uncapped package and obviously with uncapped the monthly charge rises with the speed they provision you at.

What is this uncapped service form Cybersmart like? Is it realy uncapped, or is it throttled?

Lets also not forget that MyISP has a topup price of R45 per GB whereas Afrihost remains at R29 per GB (in some instances effectively R14,50 per GB!). We need to take that into account if you plan on using in excess of your package.

When cybersmart originally launched the 3 gig package for R129 they were actually selling it to you below cost. They made money from the fact that most clients never used the full 3 gigs. When clients did use all 3 gigs, cybersmart would actually lose money.

4mb users on the other hand always use the full 3 gigs, so cybersmart must charge a "higher" non subsidized price to make a profit.

With wholesale costs having dropped to lower levels, cybersmart now leaves the pricing slightly high to make some extra money, but also to drive people to the much cheaper "adsl line rental included" accounts. People are almost never willing to change data accounts to other isp's when their line is with a particular isp. Thus, their customers almost never leave and they make more money.

//added// As Ekhaatvensters pointed out, cybersmart have moved from simply reselling other peoples bandwidth, and are now provisioning their own. So speed matters just as much as it used to, but now for different reasons.

Please explain how they loose money? if the network is in idle? if only 10 users are on? they pay for the speed of the line they buy....not the gigs transferrred.

Cybersmart is so old school....they are the still limiting you on line speed lol

I explained it it my post.

Before they provisioned their own bandwidth, they used to pay an external company for those 3 gigs.
