China - Taiwan Developments

The primary reason why China will not invade yet.

Fair enough, do you think China would agree to Taiwanese independance if Taiwan vowed not to allow US military bases or installations on it's soil?

If such a, currently impossible, situation were to come out then, at the time, the agreement would be achievable, because the underlying chain of events that lead to such an agreement to exist would imply it was considered mutually beneficial over a long term. Of course how long that agreement lasts is unknown.

Again, I don't see how it equates to meddling. Taiwan surely has a right to have anyone visit if they choose, do you think Pelosi visited without the consent of the Taiwanese government?

It's an internal matter within a previously single nation that's been split, by default it is meddling even if invited (same as the people calling for cape independence asking the un and other foreign entities to intervene in propping up and recognizing cape independence). Normally intervention with the intention of keeping the peace is a good idea, the basis of the un peace keepers, however in the case of the usa we have seen historically the usa only intervenes for their own interests (otherwise for example the drc would have been "intervened" directly, amongst other civil wars, if the usa was only motivated for world peace), and the recent track record with the usa leaving after direct intervention hasn't been great. The usa rocking up with a fabulous army ready to sacrifice their lives for your defense is the same as china rocking up with a fabulous generous monetary loan, it's not from some sincere goodwill and charity, but there is probably a hidden underlying self serving interest.

If this was a married couple, some people think taiwan is trying to get help from a marriage/divorce counselor while others think taiwan is busy sleeping around with the counselor and friends. Though in the beginning the parties involved (ccp/ktm) were busy abusing each other.

The fact that one tired US politician visiting is seen as provoking a war shows just how much people bend themselves in knots to appease the Chinese.

It's not the age of the person, its the position they hold and represent. A mayor from some backwater town in nebraska isn't going to affect anything, the speaker of the house is a different story. Sure, the speaker isn't functionally powerful like the president in the executive, but being the vice-vice president in the presidential succession instills a high level of [perceived] authority.

China isn't making the provocative moves here, the US is. The average Taiwanese is happy with the status quo and the opposition party (the party of Chiang Kai Shek) actually wants closer relations with China.

Oh? Those PLA naval exercises in Taiwanese waters aren't provocative?

That doesn't contradict the poll that they prefer the status quo. Because the alternative is war.

The Taiwanese don't want reunification, but they also don't want independence as it would imply war.

No, the alternative is an independent Taiwan. China is sabre rattling.

You can post over and over Ukrainians saying the welcome Russia, and the experts here will shout you down. Same thing with this.

I wasn't aware that a military repulsion was a welcoming party. Thanks for enlightening me.

The ignorance is so bliss over here. Since Obama's pivot to Asia strategy the USA has been arming the pacific to the teeth. They have basis in Okinawa equipped with missiles that can flatten Shanghai in a blits.

For China to invade Taiwan with its mountainous landscape that has been fortified for 70 years would be a more expensive landing than the invasion of Normandy.

Are the US in those bases by invitation?

Dictatorship apologists - and so the othering starts.

Pelosi sides with and openly supports Taiwan (independence) in a Taiwan VS China conundrum. Taiwan is currently not recognized by the UN. As such, she is working outside of the proper channels.

Same as Russia promoting the independence of Crimea and Donbas actually.

Ooooh! Suddenly Crimea and Donbas are now illegal occupations because they can be compared with Taiwan?

You're suggesting that Stanley Mathabatha could invite the Dalai Lama to visit without the approval of the National Assembly. Insanity.

Taiwan is a province of China.

Tutu tried to invite the Dalai Lama. The ANC refused him entry. Nothing to do with the national assembly. He met all visa requirements.
