Not in Gateway or Pavillion in Durban - no stock expected.

Went into the Telkom store in Hermanus today for a Desire S and they said they can order one for me for Friday. I don't expect to get it, but let's see how it pans out. Worth a try at that price...

AFAIK, the battery life tends to suck on cheap Chinese tablets... 2 -3 hours usage, perhaps less with video or games.

Buy a Colpad 2

+1
This has gotten good reviews and does support 3G but via a dongle... Only R1299

These are some AWESOME offers... I wonder how much stock they have on offer though - I'd imagine it's a handful of each

...but I know of one that has a resistive screen! (terrible to use).
Rather get your hands on a second hand Asus, samsung, apple etc. These companies are big enough to put quality parts in what they put out

What is the difference between resistive and capacitive screens (yes I know, Google the question) ? After I posted this thread I saw quite a few Samsung/iPad (good quality branded names) tablets on ebay.co.uk that are refurbished, 3G & WIfi and SIM unlocked and Android 3 and newer for knockout prices. I decided to rather get one of those. Cheers.

Resistive screens are only single touch and respond to pressure - that's why it's best to use a stylus with these.
Capacitive screens are multi-touch and respond to heat, so there's no need to pummel the device.
I made the change from resistive to capacitive a few years ago and it really makes a difference to the usage of the device, especially when you have swiping gestures.

I'd be weary of buying refurbished goods. Especially when buying it outside the country - you never know what condition you'll get it in or how long it will work.

What is your budget like?

Have a look at the Prestigio Multipad PMP 5080B. You can get it for a really nice price too. I'm really chuffed with mine - the only thing that could be better is the screen. TN panels make for difficult viewing angles.

It looks as though all the dev work is done in the Eastern Bloc (prolly Belarus), and what's really nice is that they actually respond to queries (and from what I can gather from their fb page, they listen to their customers).

The ICS they released last week is a must - everything is working really well, even a problem I had with Kindle for Android has disappeared. It requires a manual upgrade, but that's really easy, just needs a windows machine.

Thank you very much for your very detailed and decent answer to my question. You seem to be the only person here on this thread that owns/owned a Chinese tablet.
What is the battery life in hours when surfing and when using it for video ?
Does it have built-in codecs for the most poplar video formats like AVI/WMV and MP4 ?
Performance when playing video, can it handle video without being jerky.
Do you get 'out of memory' messages when running apps ?
How many apps can you install on the device ?
Does each installed app take up (a chunk) of the valueable RAM (not extra memory, I know the difference) ?
Does the amount of RAM (512Mb), not expanded extra memory, affect the number of apps one can have installed ? For example, can I have several apps/games installed that take up 24Mb memory and still run Google maps/mail etc without getting 'out of memory' messages.
Does it have GPS for location based services ?
Does it have the Android App store installed as standard ?

Thank you :)

I have the Onda VX610W Android Tablet that a mate of mine picked up in China for me. They retail for about $100 to $110.
I have a 32 GB memory card installed in it.

What is the battery life in hours when surfing and when using it for video? Surfing = 8-12 hours; Video = 6 Hours, possibly longer.
Does it have built-in codecs for the most poplar video formats like AVI/WMV and MP4? = Yes, and you can add other apps that will add more support (like MX Player).
Performance when playing video, can it handle video without being jerky? = Yes, no problems... full screen smooth video in HD.
Do you get 'out of memory' messages when running apps? Nope, never seen that yet.
How many apps can you install on the device? I have about thirty apps installed at the moment.
Does each installed app take up (a chunk) of the valueable RAM (not extra memory, I know the difference)? Not sure, but I don't think so. It is easy to close running apps.

Does it have GPS for location based services? No, no GPS and no 3G - WiFi only.
Does it have the Android App store installed as standard? Yes

Isn't the Prestigio a German tablet?

I see they say resistance screen  must mean resistive screen? /those aren't good

Does it play games like angry birds and so on?
Can it play 1080p video? Edit: I see it does, that is pretty impressive.
Will it ever get ICS?

The box says "Made responsibly in China" :D

The About us on their website says "headquartered in Cyprus".

The people I've communicated with all have Russian-like names.

@gerasmus: will respond to your query sometime soon. The 5080b is pretty similar to what Gary mentioned. There are some other irritations that I'm trying to sort out.

Anybody know Rebeltech? I orderred the Prestigio from them last night and they replied with a order confirmation and that I shouldn't do the payment now, they will let me know when: (Link)
So I started to wonder if someone bought from Rebeltech in the past and how the experience was...???

Bought plenty from them, including my Prestigio, no problems.
