Cities: Skylines

Hi Guys

are there any Demo's available to see if I like it and if my Hardware can handle it?

Watch some videos on Youtube and check out the minimum and recommended specs on the Steam page.

Think I'm getting the hang of this now, and have found another flaw - I like building too close together in the beginning. As if unlocking zones is some sot of evil, which you only do once you've used up all the space you started with. So eventually I end up having multiple industrial and commercial zones (the big traffic producers) all over the show, which then means trucks are going all over the show and clogging things up. Not that my current city is gridlocked, but there are a few moments here and there where a backlog forms (thankfully they still clear).

When I start again I'll have to remind myself, even with all 9 zones unlocked (heck even 25) thats only 6x6km (or 10x10). Perfectly acceptable at that size to have 100% dedicated areas. Which will make traffic much simpler (if you plan ahead of course). Industry at the "entrance" to the city, then commercial close by somewhere (so that trucks don't clog up the rest of your city), with offices and residential everywhere else.

It's just all so tricky when you play it normally (ie you have to unlock things as you go)

Yeah, the unlocking thing is a bit of a mystery for me to some extent. Trains have been around since the time of Moses, it is a well known fact, so why can't we have trains at the start? Sure, I get that small towns don't have budgets for laying rail like a Tycoon on meth, but the point is that we are building cities here out of virgin simulated soil, almost like Sim-Brasilia or whatever the latest Custom-built-city in China is called. At least some bus routes / pickup and drop off points even if only for out of town busses... buss'... errr, bussé, ummm, bussii like Greyhound?

Also, if you look at a town like Paarl / Wellington in the Boland there is only 1 high rise around in the CBD and I'm sure the population is way over 50 000, I think a medium residential step to high density would have helped here, since my city of 40k started looking like Dubai
very early on. (Okay, there is Strand, the seafront does look rather impressive, but still, CBD's and real skyscrapers start becoming a thing around 100k plus I'd think.)

But still a damn fine game.

Any idea how the let your industries turn into farms?

You need to make a district, then make it a farm district. It's the third button from the left (right of the zone tab) to get into the district tab

No clue then  I haven't built any myself, will try tonight.

Traffic from these zones will follow that graph, so it is a good idea to try plan your traffic flow so that they are not crossing the map the whole time, otherwise you'll have trucks clogging up everything. Only found this out today, go guess what that means? Another restart, yay

I just realised what knock on this has for non-renewable industry

Simplified you'll have a 50/50 split in your district - 50% extracting raw materials, 50% processing. So that's a bit of internal traffic and a bit going out to your general industry. Once the resource runs out though, double the traffic coming in (importing the raw mats) and double the traffic going out to generic. Probably a good idea to keep this in mind and make sure you provision for that eventual traffic bump.

Yet another restart, but think I'm happy with this one - http://imgur.com/a/6VlWn
Got some railways moving goods from industry to commerce, 10% of my pop uses public transport, traffic has some red spots but traffic is always flowing so no issue there yet. Up to 23k now, just a bit more and I'll set up the harbour next :D Something not lekka with the offices though, struggling to get them levelled up - will be tomorrows problem

Ok, pics of my first city! Starting my second one soon.

Unfortunately I don't have enough time or too tired when I do get time to game.

Learn't alot from my mistakes in this city! Started off normally, after I reached 65k, I had a residential bleed of +/-5000. I then activated unlimited money.

Save Game available if anyone wants it to mess around with.

@Archer: Your office district looks great!

Definitely going to use the circular design for my office districts.

How is it wrt traffic and service provision?

Thanks!

This game looks great. Just purchased it on steam. May need to buy a newer PC, mines from the ark.

Traffic is pretty good, but I think the entrance can be tweaked to make it better. And my high density res circle needs two metros to function! So much traffic from there to the commerce zone

Added some more pics into the same album, currently at 36k and everything is looking good - http://imgur.com/a/6VlWn

Did you a mod for the circles?

Linky please.

Load up some pics, maybe I can give you some pointers? I basically try to make a small district, connect it with walkways to a central point, and from there run buses or metro. Think I'm at 18k pop, and 1.2k use public transport. Many of the rest simply walk to work and back since I also connect some of the central points together. It's not perfect but I've had no major hangups so far, though 18k is hardly huge

Made an album now, will upload as I go along - http://imgur.com/a/G6axR

I tried your idea of not using grids and it worked wonders. I also connected walkways everywhere. SimCity really ruined me with its tiny plots, something which I keep forgetting isn't an issue here.

Here's a link to my latest city -> http://i.imgur.com/UHWJGHY.png

20K is still small, but it's a lot better than any of my previous cities. I have a few orange/red spots, but traffic doesn't back up so it's nothing too serious. I'm going to expand to the bottom a bit. Probably some more offices and high density residential areas. The moment you stop thinking in grids things just get so much better.
