Hello

This is my first post so be gentle!

I want to purshase a CloudGate so that my 10 year old can research his homework etc on the internet on the TV. I thought that this is the solution until I read the thread discussing this elsewhere.

Most of it is pretty in depth for me. What I want is internet, youtube, facebook etc.

The three products:

http://www.cloudgate.co.za/
http://www.avsupply.co.za/product_info.php/android-quad-core-mini-with-xbmc-p-641
http://www.avsupply.co.za/product_info.php/droidtv-mxiii-media-player-with-android-and-xbmc-p-437

Which should I go for for the intent I have given? Has anyone got feedback on any of these product? Feel free to offer better alternatives as well.

Thank you for your replies.

Get her a cheap tablet.

That comes with other issues like having to get OTG cables - also a bit more expensive for something decent as I assume OP's budget (WHICH SHE DIDN'T MENTION BTW) is R1200.

Tab that can do all the above around R1k or less
R59 @ hd cabling for usb-otg
Microsoft keyboard + mouse R199 for wireless @ esquire.

fits budget :)

Erm... if I may ask... how? Tablet with the usb-otg cable to connect keyboard and mouse (correct?) but how will you display the image on the TV?

Why do you want to display the image on the tv specifically?
Unless it's a serious screen it is going to suck for trying to study.

Because that's what the OP wanted ... and then your solution made me think I could do the same with any decent android device :o Conversely, using a keyboard and mouse on a 7" screen can't be a decent experience?

i.e. use any android device "like a cloudgate" ...

I used my xperia s this way many times (has an hdmi port).
My neighbours currently use it as a media player.

for that particular device to function perfectly:
1x powered usb hub (or usb-otg if you don't mind no mouse/keyboard while charging or have a bluetooth mouse/keyboard/remote).
micro hdmi to hdmi cable (came with the phone).
mouse/keyboard (depending on usb hub).

If you want it to work on an hdmi monitor external speakers also help :)

Also, I used a keyboard/mouse on the same device many times when not near a real pc :)

Yeah, I've also used my Asus tablet in a similar fashion as it has a mini HDMI port and plugged into a monitor with audio out (via the HDMI in).

In the scenario where your device has no HDMI out then some MHL + OTG magical device is required. For some reason I thought you had the magical formula :) but I obviously misinterpreted what you said.

I have a real computer plugged into my tv but it is purely for entertainment, even the bit of maintenance I have to do on that big screen is a pain (42" lg lcd @1080p).

I'm using a HP microserver but the clougate approach intrigues me (though I have no interest in purchasing one) and I saw in some other threads guys suggestion other android devices (media players) as substitutes. Just wanted to play around with the idea of having an "Android PC" at home.

I ended up giving my raspberry away (got bored with it) and never tried an android pc but it may be fun :)

With my Asus tablet plugged into the TV all I got was a 'bigger screen' with navigation still on the actual tablet. Not really anything to get excited about I guess. I'm going to try add an OTG cable + keyboard and mouse to the equation and I technically then should have myself an Android PC (and to some extent a "cloudgate"). I somehow doubt there's going to be much MORE to get excited about though :D

meh... either need a device with HDMI out so you can use an OTG cable at the same time or some propriety dock/device with all the necessary outputs.

xperia s worked pretty well with a mouse. had a different launcher that came up with hdmi that made more sense (or if a sony tv just use the remote).
