Coffin duo told man they would shoot him if he ran, court hears

Middelburg – Victor Mlotshwa, the man who was beaten and placed in a coffin by two men in Middelburg, was also threatened with being shot during the ordeal, the Middelburg Magistrate's Court heard on Thursday.

Investigative Officer Detective Constable Dimakatso Bahula testified at Theo Jackson's and Willem Oosthuizen's bail application hearing. He told the court that, on August 17, Mlotshwa left his place of residence at a squatter camp.

He had noticed two Land Cruisers following him.

Bahula said the bakkies had stopped and two men had got out and assaulted Victor.

She also said that both men had warned Mlotshwa that they would shoot him if he tried to run.

She said Jackson had allegedly fetched a coffin and told Mlotshwa to get inside, while Oosthuizen allegedly assisted him. They had also threatened him with a knobkerrie.

Prosecutor Rean Lourens opposed bail.

In danger if released

He said the accused might influence the witnesses and that they might be in danger if they were released. He also said the public peace might be disturbed.

Jackson and Oosthuizen had abandoned their bail bid at their previous appearance last month.

They are facing charges of kidnapping and assault, with intent to do grievous bodily harm, Nyuswa said.

The case was originally postponed to January 25, while they remained in custody.

The incident happened in August.

The court gallery was packed with journalists and members of the public on Thursday, while DA and ANC members protested outside.

The alleged assault of Mlotshwa took place at the JM de Beer Boerdery, next to the Komati power station in Mpumalanga.

In the 20-second video, which was posted on YouTube on November 7, one man, speaking in Afrikaans, forces Mlotshwa into a coffin and threatens to pour petrol on him.

Whether or not this chap did wrong, or stole stuff or whatever, it is not up to them, call the police and move on.

Thats fresh coming from the EFF. Yet they incite violence, murder and criminal activites against whites.
It didn't take long for MMusi to show his colours. There are many other high priority crimes, like murder(black on black, farm murders), farm attacks, violent crime etc. All he's done with this is show who he really is. That tweet is totally unacceptable, it incites people to do the same thing the perpetrators did - took the law into their own hands and meet out justice.

Coffin duo back in court on Friday

Middelburg – The bail application of two white men who allegedly forced a black man into a coffin will continue in the Middelburg Magistrate's Court on Friday.

After Theo Jackson and Willem Oosthuizen’s application was postponed on Thursday, Mpumalanga ANC regional chairperson Speedy Mashilo said they should spend Christmas in jail so "they know how it feels to be in a coffin".

"Not all white people are racists, but these two are. Black and white, South Africa belongs to all of us," Mashilo said.

He said they would be back on Friday to support Victor Mlotshwa.

Mlotshwa was allegedly beaten, threatened with being shot, and forced to get into a coffin at the JM de Beer Boerdery, near the Komati power station, in August.

Jackson and Oosthuizen face charges of kidnapping and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Testifying during their bail hearing on Thursday, investigating officer Detective Constable Dimakatso Bahula told the court that on August 17, Mlotshwa left his home in a local informal settlement.

Treatening a trespasser that's walking on your property and humiliating him is completely reasonable. Uploading it on facebook with the political climate we have today is stupid and these guy's biggest crime. Let them do a public oppology and some community service and be done with it.

yet now it's a drama because this case it used an an example against other cases. we can't just say "good, they were caught", we have to say "but BLACK PEOPLE ...." and this **** starts all over again.

if a crook is caught, congratulate the police and justice system, leave it there and this **** stops. don't use every issue in the country as an agenda or fuel for another issue. every time the drama stops, someone comes and pours petrol on it and it starts all over again.

Coffin assault accused denied bail

JOHANNESBURG - Two men accused of a racist assault have been denied bail.

Willem Oosthuizen and Theo Jackson appeared in the Middelburg Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Magistrate Jongilizwe Dumehleli says the motive was very clear.

The pair allegedly beat up Rethabile Mlotshwa, whom they'd accused of trespassing, before forcing him into a coffin while also threatening to set him alight.

Dumehleli says the incident was clearly racially motivated.

"Perpetrated more than a year after the introduction of the constitutional order, it was arrogant in the extreme and incited terror among black citizens."
