I don't think we should be using the "She was asking for it because she wore a short skirt" defence to justify or detract from the crime.
I also think that a lot of people in this thread do a discredit to those in minimum wage jobs who do their jobs well and honestly.

In reality it is very likely that the team manager was in control of the money!
Or they had the master code for the safe (people forget their codes sometimes).
It doesn't really matter whether the money was laying in the open or not. The incident is going to cause bad press either way.
Hotels will have to increase security during the SWC, and urge guests to make use of the safes. Even going so far as to make personally sure that the foreign guest have done so.

Oh please..... "deciding" to rape someone based on what they are wearing is in no way similar to stuffing some money in your pockets! If you can use blatantly stupid arguments like this then others can use what they want as defence. Although in saying this I cannot see anyone claiming it is fine that the money was taken, we are merely pointing out the stupidity in not ensuring your possessions are stored safely.
In fact I was not even doing that at first, I was merely pointing out the eagerness of the posters to spread this type of story and was thanking them for their dedication.
Theft is never justified, but leaving money in a hotel room is pretty RETARDED. Doesn't matter if you're in Europe, America or South Africa.

I would not call stealing US$21000 petty theft if that is amount that was stolen.
I've heard $2000 or $21000. Huge difference, wish we could get an accurate report. Also heard that the cleaning ladies are currently under investigation for unrelated charges... if this is true, the hotel has a lot to answer for (depending on what the charges are of course).
You seem to have inside knowledge of this crime (how do you know the money was "lying around"?). Are you part of the investigative team?

Actually not !
My cousin lives in Canada, and has this habit of leaving his wallet all over the place. He always gets it back (his adress & phone number is inside), with all the contents, including cash, intact. I believe (according to his wife) that this has happened about 10 times !
Admittedly he doesn't live in one of the big cities.
With all due respect, no chance of that happening here.

I doubt they had the ability to crack open a safe. I bet the money was in a place they considered safe, like under the bed or something... but really, these dudes are from Colombia. I'm sure they know what theft is there.

So if someone breaks out the mini-safe then the money was also "lying around" ? Come to think of it, in the SA context that may well be true !
