Uhm, maths fail.

$21 000 = R161 238 (at current exchange rate of $1=R7.678)
R161 238/R3000 = 53.75

53.75 != 70 000

If being poor was an excuse for theft, then India and China would have had much higher cases of theft.
Being poor does not make you less honest or lower your moral values.

And what exactly is "my kind"? Let's avoid ad hominem attacks herre. Your assertion has always been that crime will not affect tourists because tourists will stay out of the poor areas where crime occurs. Then at the very first opportunity a visiting team is robbed in their five star hotel...

But why am I arguing with someone who believes you are entitled to steal money just because you have a low paying job?
 
Very disappointing....

How anyone can steal from their customers is beyond me. How anyone can embarrass their employee and the country on the eve of what is to be the biggest and greatest PR exercise in the countries history is beyond me.

How can anyone be so naive and stupid to believe they could walk away with 20k without any repercussions???

What is hotel management doing to prevent this sort of thing happening other than installing safes in every room???

What can they do to prevent this sort of thing??

Rigorous back round checks on all job applicants
2 house keeping employees working together in a room.
Room key/card system with house keeping employees details for accountability
Bonus incentive scheme for zero incident report
Guilty employees arrested, charged, convicted and imprisoned, set the precedent..

Most hotels (even those that are not five star!) provide a safe in the room. This is not just the case in SA. Now why do you think they do this? And why do you think it is usually accompanied by a sign recommending that all valuables be locked away or left at the front desk for safe keeping?

I don't leave a R20 note lying on the seat of my car when I get it washed for a reason. The temptation is too great for most!

There is a big diffference between explicable (people are poor therefore money is tempting) versus excusable (crime never is - unless it is in self-defence).

LOL ok first I used R10- $1 because that is a more reliable exchange rate, then I forgot the 000 at the end of the 3k... didn't make sense to me either.

Its still 70 months of pay and that is a cr@p load to these guys.

We do seem to attract these sort of cash carriers. 9/10 any country any hotel room anywhere in the world & you are not going to see that cash ever again!
 
Doesn't excuse the crime but seriously, where these guys on Colombian marching powder or something? Who leaves that sort of money lying around? Every single hotel I've ever been (all over the world) has warned not to leave valuables lying around.

To be fair the money wasn't stolen out of one rooms but out of multiple rooms. But it's still doff to leave those amounts of money laying around.

From what I understand it's a 5-star hotel. I'm positive that there would be safes installed. I've been to 3-star hotels with safes to store your valuables.

I'm not sure how big a touring soccer squad is. Say all in all 20 players/coaches/whatnot. That makes it $1000 each. give or take. That's hardly a lot of spending money for an international player. Even @ $2000 per person for a 3 week stay is very reasonable. (Considering they're in a 5 star hotel)

Where did you see that the Colombian team was staying for three weeks?

I am not questioning the amount of money carried as any tourist is entitled to carry what they wish but why the hell not put it in a safe?! You are high profile guests, the manager would surely be willing to bend over backwards to accommodate any requests you have, even putting it in the main hotel safe.

And where is it stated that it was lying around? If each player has $1000 tucked away hidden in the bottom of their bags, that seems reasonable enough to me. It's possible (and likely) that these women went through their belongings to find the money. I highly doubt they would just leave a wad of dollar bills lying on the table, so that the "poor" cleaning ladies just wouldn't be able to resist stealing it.
