Admittedly he doesn't live in one of the big cities.

That happened to me, I didn't have cash left in my wallet as I had drunk it all and dropped it somewhere. There wasn't even my name and address inside, the security guard phoned my gym and got hold of me that way.

... There are some good people out there.

Asking to get yourself excluded doesn't make much sense; but then, most of what you say doesn't make sense either, so I guess it balances out.
 
I dunno, company I work for travel around internationally a lot. 3-4 star hotels. Leave cameras, cellphones, wallets etc laying around in the rooms. Never gets stolen. Whether they're in china, japan, alegeria, EU or the states it's always talked about in coffee time

We Safa's are desensitized to the issue. We think it's normal practise around the rest of the world to lock everthing with ball and chain... normal to have R50k burglar bars...

My friends from the UK and US are shocked when they see how paranoid we are. I keep my cellphone/wallet/keys in my pocket constantly, wherever I am. Women here have their bags with them at all times... the international people often go to the bathroom leaving bags, cellphones and wallets on their table. They don't understand how we can be so paranoid. I've always thought it would be the petty crime that is going to be rife in the World Cup, not the murders/rapes.
 
I don't know why but I think that leaving money around is different to leaving other valuables like camera's and phones. Yes people steal anything they can but if you stop some one and search them you can prove that its your phone but you can't prove that its your R200.

People just need to be realistic.

The problem being, we invited international people from international countries with international mindsets. We assured them it was safe, and they are putting their trust in us. Regardless of if they leave money or valuables lying around, they were told it would be safe. Their "realistic" is very different to our "realistic"... because presumably the vast majority of them have not experienced crime as we have.

If we break their trust, it's going to only lead to bad publicity for us, and instead of generating sustainable income for the country, it'll do the opposite. We can't expect them to suddenly adopt an SA mindset now that they are arriving - our government promised them safety, and we need to deliver that, in EVERY sphere (petty crime OR serious crime).
 
Like I said before, every hotel room in the world has a safe and i'm pretty sure that everywhere you stay they tell you to lock up your goods.

There is no real magic safety check for cleaning staff...

I do agree with you there - but my worry is not about this incident. It was impossible to predict this, and it was near impossible to police it. My worry is that this is a sign of bigger things to come, of petty theft on a scale bigger than hotel rooms. Preying on vulnerable international people in terms of petty theft is going to be far too easy... Although of course I'm jumping the gun and it's very possible that this is just an isolated incident.

That's nice. But rather get their bank details and do a transfer. Safer for everyone concerned, and - to be painfully blunt - good business practice as well.

I'll say it again, you won't leave valuables lying around in a hotel room in Paris. And they are from Colombia... It's no excuse for theft, but see it for what it is.

Big whoop... these guys earn R3k a month, they see $21 000 lying in a empty room. That is 70 000 months of salary for them, like winning the lotto, ever have to work again. Really if you found 70 000 times your salary would you take it or leave it ?

Its a horrible world where people take your money if you leave it lying around. That's why most hotels in the world have safes.

They should know better.

However been poor or poorly paid does not justify any crime..and is basically a cop out for having no morals.

True, without law and morals we would have chaos.

The thing to consider is that neither of us live in a shack and have nothing to eat.
