Column: iPad > PCs

I'm not sure what that means ....

OTA is downloading only the files it needs extra - while iTunes is the full installation?
Like upgrading windows to a new installation?

Essentially yes :)

Kids, kids kids....settle down no need to argue!

This whole debate is going to be null and void in a year or two as the two will ultimately integrate somewhat with windows 8 coming out.....

Think of an ultrabook that has a touch screen that can turn to make it a tablet......that is the future laptop/tablet combination that will sell the best.Even apple knows this and thats why there is alot of talk that apple is trying to make its desktop OS more like ios.

Desktops will never go out of fashion, sales may drop but they will always be sold. Its just that tablets and laptops will ultimately merge...until then I'm sitting with my laptop as typing out what Ive just written on a touch only tablet even with swype is alot more painful!

Apple could have made such an ultrabook already. They didn't because touchscreens don't really make sense on a laptop or desktop.

Mac OS is NOT turning into iOS. I don't know why everyone thinks they will. It is staying true to it's traditional input methods. Apple are just bringing some handy features over from iOS. This is confirmed by Mountain Lion.

Apple knows laptops and desktops are here to stay, and they will co-exist with tablets.

Desktop yeah sure it doesn't make much sense for mass consumers. But why wouldn't it make sense for a hybrid laptop/tablet?
It didn't in the past because of three main reasons.

1.Thickness and weight.
2.Battery life
3.Operating systems not touch optimized natively.

All these obstacles are fast dissolving so is there any other reason you can see for it not making sense?

The Asus Transformer has achieved this to some effect. I would imagine Ubuntu Mobile will make huge waves in this sector.

The Asus Transformer achieved that, but the market resoundingly said "Meh".
Unless they were aiming for a very small (But not seemingly that profitable) marketshare

I guess it did somewhat but its too much of a build me up lego style kind of device. Then the thought of do i carry my keyboard with me today etc.....just too many choices and it doesn't add up to as much as a dedicated device like a tablet/ultrabook hybrid would. The ergonomics just don't make it easy to use.

And the OS's are not very powerful like Windows/OSX.

Indeed... hence I want a slate... with Windows 8!

However, insane pricing seems to make these a no go too.

I think it more a case of terrible marketing, not disinterest. For example, the general public knows what an iPad is, as well as a Galaxy Tab. Both are available everywhere, both have extensive advertising.

But just try and walk into a store and ask for the Asus Transformer Prime. Most won't have it, or even know what it is.
Once I was asked "Do you mean Acer?"

Even worse, those that have the Transformer Prime don't have the 3G version, again thanks to Asus screwing up and only offering it in Asia.

Apple has a comparativly small marketing budget.
Acer are a large company. They, like all other companies, only put their marketing dollars where they have a strong product with good chance of profitable returns

And as you said, Samsung has had a lot of marketing behind the Galaxy Tab, and the market has greeted that with a 'Meh' as well.
There just isn't a tablet market. There is an iPad market (And a Kindle Market)

I referred to Samsung to point out that it is well known, I personally would choose an actual iPad over the [-]iPad clone[/-] Galaxy,
But ultimately I would want the Transformer Prime because it offers more than the iPad, and my only problem is availability.

I suspect once Windows 8 arrives, solutions such as the Transformer Prime might start taking off

For some reason I also find the ipad more attractive than the samsung alternative despite lack of flash and having to use itunes.

But yes the Asus transformer prime tf700t is definitely the most attractive tablet right now....i keep wondering if we will ever get it though,i really dont see how asus marketing budget can be as big as Apples as normal people on the street don't even know what an asus transformer is!Maybe its just in SA.

The iPad's huge market share is also good because it means all those flash developers will need to rewrite their sites in html5 or face being left out, and once they do that they are not too far off from deciding they don't actually need the flash version of their sites anyway (just need to get all those idiots to stop using Internet Exploder)

A reduction in flash use is a great side effect :D

Wasn't in 2007 that Mr Jobs announced Flash is old?
Haven't 200+ million iOS devices been sold in that time?

I'm still effected by Flash issues - so obviously this hasn't forced that many developers to follow Mr Jobs. In a few years Flash will probably be gone totally, but that's almost a decade since Mr Jobs announced it and forbade any of his devices to have it. That's a decade that his fans haven't been able to use current technologies.

That's actually another thing I dislike about Apple actually. They remove items that they feel are redundant and add items they feel are the future. I'm buying the iPad NOW ... I want to use what is technology NOW. In 10 years I'll have a new device
