Column: iPad > PCs

How is that a technicality?
Saying WiFi = PC is like saying Vodacom = phone :wtf:

Where in SA are you going to get a wifi network? He said you need a PC, in most cases having a wifi network to connect to you need a PC in SA.

Edit: He didn't say wifi = PC. He said you need a PC (Which isn't always right, because some peoples work does provide it for you and there is mugg and bean etc). But I do get what he was trying to say.

Or perhaps a 3G enabled WiFi router ?

or perhaps that yes.

Was just thinking, can you have the normal adsl router still have wifi if you don't have a PC connected to it?

Indeed you can. Adsl + WiFi router a much cheaper solution than 3G data prices.

Telkom gives you a wifi enabled router if you sign a contract, most ISPs do. Of course, as you mentioned places like mugg and bean and McDonalds have wifi, as do loads of other places. Many newer cellphones also let you create a wifi hotspot.

He said you need a PC to use facetime - you dont.
He said you need a PC to update the OS - you dont.
He said you need a PC to download app - you dont.

What you do need is WIFI.

I'm on my Facetime right now ... 'Connect to a wifi network to use Facetime' ?

Yes, Facetime (irrespective of the device) requires a WiFi connection -- it does not work over 3G. You may try a WiFi hotspot on another 3G device though. Edit: Jip, that works.

Okay... another Windows user doff question...

If the family with the older iOS on their iPad2s go to update their devices... can this be done with just 3G ? How big is the update ? Some of the family have only ADSL without WiFi, their iPads are couch Skype devices...

Would it be recommended for them to use their laptops / PCs for the updates ?

Yes I know that is what you need, in his case he relies on his Router to have a wifi network which also isn't technically his PC, but he doesn't like the reliance on things that isn't readily available to him all the time.

Any iOS update before 5 has to be tethered. I see it quite pointless to get a tablet (whether it be Android or Apple) with having an 'eco-system' in place to get full benefit from it. Lady at my work just got a Galaxy Tab and thought she could connect via her work's 3G dongle... people really should do their homework properly.

No you can't use just 3G. My biggest gripe with the iPad. You need to connect to a wifi network somehow, or you need to do it through iTunes. I only ever did it over wifi, so I am not to sure about how it is done on iTunes but it should be fairly simple. iTunes really is very simple to use, if you want to do simple things.

Updates must be done via a WiFi connection; however I have done them via the Iphone WiFi hotspot when I had spare data. The 5.0.1 to 5.1 update on the iPad 1 was about 170MB.

That's the only way of doing incremental updates. If you use iTunes it downloads the whole thing which is more than 700MB.

:erm:

I have 2 routers at home, both allow WiFi connections from phones, pads, consoles, laptops, PC's.
Neither one has it's WiFi disabled when I shutdown a PC.

Why do you have this perception that WiFi is a thing that only works when there's a PC connected?
Are you using a WiFi dongle connected to your PC for wireless?

I reckon that's a technicality ...

You don't need the PC per se, but you do ultimately need a PC. I've just taken one of our Aruba access points out the box, plugged it in and ... my iPad won't connect. Do you think a PC may be needed somewhere along the line?

Simple is required... some are over 60 !

My brother inherited his iPad2... his wife decided she needed one, got if from FNB... and actually found she had no real use for it, apart from solitaire on the patio... so she gave it to her hubby. He was chuffed and a bit sad, he was waiting for the new iPad (3)... but did not look a gift horse in the mouth.

Most of the family felt the "need" to get one too from FNB... I guess the FNB marketing paid off for Apple... and now these are casually used as Skype phones, if at all.

I guess perhaps the iOS update is not vital then.

I never switch off my PC so never really thought about it. After I typed it I thought it was probably stupid, but didn't want to erase anything.

Yeeps! I suspect that they are all sub iOS5.

I am just thinking that unless the update is vital, they stick with what they got.

You don't need a PC to run WiFi, anywhere. WiFi is provided by your ADSL/Wireless/3G router - which in most cases you can set up with any browser capable device (most commonly a PC, but a tablet works as well).

I set up my ADSL modem & WiFi Router without ever using a PC.
Why would you think you need it? (Unless you have some obscure router that requires an executable to run. But I haven't seen that in a looong time)

WiFi is not a PC

However, if you change your argument to be an iPad loosing functionality without Wifi, then I agree. It is a must-have
