Column: iPad > PCs

Oh ok, I thought you said she got an ipad in order to save cash. There's no cash saving there.

There is actually if you realise the laptops she buys are in the +$1000 range. ;)

Btw, that better spec'ed PC of yours obviously includes a display with a resolution greater than 2048 x 1536, right? :)

Gosh I hate Apple fanboys.

That is the fixed photo. People saying Google not telling the whole truth about user numbers. I guess Apple does it aswell.

Lol nice title to enrage the fanboys. Should really be Tablets vs Desktop PCs. The hysteria around tablets will subside and computer sales will start to look equal in comparison. Let's see what the sales are doing this time next year, tablets should hopefully be the norm by then.

There you have it. Consoles suck so bad... It's even lower than a pc which is outsold by an ipad :)

Seeing this is sort of on topic. Can anybody else not access the ZaStrore?

Edit: Nevermind

The ipad and other tablet devices are primarily media consumption devices.

iPad specifically is to access media that Apple deems appropriate.

Everytime I've picked up an iPad I've always wondered what I should do with it.

Watch a movie? ......no.....iPad won't access my windows server and play my AVI's
Read a comic?......no......iPad won't access my windows server and read CBR's
Play music?.....no....iPad won't........

So to do any of those things I need to grab my net book or laptop or android device.

Furthermore I don't buy into the notion of the cloud replacing the traditional PC. Firstly the cloud is fickle, there's no guarantee your data will be there, or even be accessable when you want it or even safe.....

What, of the fate of legitimate users of Megaupload's data?

What if some faceless executive tags your personal content as a copyright violation?

Like of facebook, google and twitter are always really to "Sell" you and your data.

Already developers are working on secure self stored social media platforms.

Perfectly possible with fibre to the door and and Hard drive capacity still following Moore's law.
Hard drives, natural disasters aside tend to double in capacity every year for no real increase in price.

Personal cloud servers are now a reality, but they're not run on iPad.

I sort of get it. I look at people like my mother who, instead of getting a new computer this year, has decided that she'd rather have an iPad and hold on to the laptop she has. Given the price of these tablets and the economy being in the state its in a lot of consumers must be making the same decision.

Understandable. Tablets are being purchased as companions or accesories to a househould computer ie: a slimmer device to consume media while mobile or relaxing. My mother has a machine I built for her in 2007. Nothing wrong with it, does office, mail and internet so she's perfectly happy. Folks like her would be happier to sit on a couch and browse the odd bit of news and facebook versus sitting hunched over a pc.

That's not true, you can do all three those things on an iPad quite easily.

How much did your mum pay for the iPad? You can get a better spec PC for R2500. If price was the factor, people would go for PC. (and they are: 200mill PCs vs 15mill iPads sold in 2011) Can't really compare the two since has it's own purpose.

Consumers do not care. They don’t care how much RAM it has, what processor it uses, or how many wireless bands are supported (apparently the most ever in a device).

I want to know that it is better, faster and that its battery lasts longer.

I want to know what I can do with it.

And this is why Apple is winning. It’s not selling you dual core and quad-core, 7 inch, 7.7 inch, 8.9 inch 10.1 inch and 12 inch tablets.

One iPad. The only decision a consumer has to make is how much storage they want.

Complaining that you think perhaps that they should care about specs is missing the point.
Beside, for R2500 that PC will be a really $h!t experience. Would you use a R2500 PC?

Of course you can get a pc for R2500, but you can't compare that to an iPad which has a 10 hour battery life, weighs 600g and is holdable in one hand.

Guys, the headline says column - so it is Hilton's opinion and written from his point of view. I actually like that MyBB put the column part in the title as there have been some complaints in the past.

First off, I don't share Hilton's passionate love of the iDevices, but nothing he said was made up. The iPad is selling quite well and it will probably sell well in the future as well.

I would have thought having a tablet vs PC graph would have been more appropriate as the iPad isn't the only Tablet, but as Apple is the only one that has been so succesful in this market and because the Tablet market is quite new it is probably fair to only compare the established maker in the market.

The other contenders in the market is much smaller than Apple, but I am sure the tablet market will grow more.

My power was off yesterday for quite some time and I don't think a laptop (I don't have one) would have entertained me for quite as long as the power went off but the tablets does make it quit easily.

I am of the opinion that a tablet isn't really a must have and it doesn't really have to much going for it if you can only have one device. But as a secondary device it is quite useful. I would rather have a PC and a tablet than a PC and a laptop/notebook.

Selling does not really relate to market share.

People buy new tablets every year. PCs are in some cases only replaced after 5 or more years. Also, PCs are upgraded during their lifetime which can extend the time until the next purchase.

Um.

The iPad requires a PC to do anything

Other tablets are far closer than being stand alone than an iPad. I feel dragging my desktop with me incase I need to transfer photos, music or other media. I'll also want that desktop incase I need to update or actually download something. I'll also need to run Handbrake or something to convert files to whatever 'i' devices understand

They should rather had left out the battery totally because it needs to be tethered to iTunes to actually make it useful

Perhaps do a follow-up article about using an iPad only... no PC / iPC anywhere in the user experience... from unboxing to using WITHOUT having a personal computer or laptop anywhere.

Just user + iPad... see what he can do with JUST that device from the get-go. just the iPad... no iTunes etc... just the iPad.

And programming on a iPad, that will be most excellent :)

Reason why iPads will continue to sell more than PCs because people who own PCs tend to hold on to them for more years than people who own iPads. Typical scenario, fan boois sell or giveaway their previous generations iDevices in order to get the current iDevice. And besides the lifespan of a PC is long as compared to the iPad, one can upgrade a PC to work with current stuff but can't upgrade an iPad. In future PC sales should be measured in totality i.e. including components sold

Well actually, I think you can now with iOS 5+. I remember when I set up my iPad that there was an option to sync to the cloud so I assume that you can go without ever touching your PC. Just hope that the 50MB limit doesn't apply to that.

I used the normal iTune way so I don't know if I am correct on this. But yes I would not want to go that route if I don't have to.

The SG Tab I had was much friendlier to set up in my opinion, but the tab also had its problems.

As I said, I don't think I will be able to live without my PC just yet.

Not all people program, only a tiny of all PC users. Who knows, a PC might become a niche market for only programmers and web designers etc. Most people that use PCs only consume, so a tablet might be all they would need.
